Ashworth hopes to inspire others youths to join program continued from p.24 "By giving them the musical trivia, it gives them something to listen for while I play," Ashworth said. "As I go through my performance, I can see them becoming more engaged and by the time I'm finished, they're smiling. It really brings them joy and that's very rewarding to see." The genres of music she plays include jazz, pop and classical, with a variety of pieces from different musical eras, such as Baroque to contemporary. A vision to expand Ashworth says her vision for the program is to expand it to hospitals in Ontario, Canada and "maybe even further than that." She hopes to create Suite Melody Care DVDs and CDs of her performances for sale, proceeds of which she will donate to participating hospitals. Ashworth's parents, Stephen and Allison, say proud doesn't begin to describe how they feel seeing their daughter display such social consciousness at a young age. "That whole value system you hope your child grows up to not only understand, but reflect in whatever they do; when we see that happening, we enjoy it, too," said Ashworth's father, Stephen. "When you ask a question about how do you know she's making a difference -- she comes home and tells us stories, about how the patients' moods change... we're beaming ear-to-ear." Giving back to the community Stephen said he and his wife have always encouraged their daughter to give back to the community. "One of the things Leslie has done throughout her musical career to date is share her talents with others, through fundraising, giving performances... but always to be humbled by the fact you have a gift and get to share it with others," he said. "That's what drove her to create this vision and inspire other young music students." Those interested in joining the Suite Melody Care program can fill out a performer application form online or email Ashworth at ashworthproductions@gmail.com, detailing their information, musical background, an explanation of why they want to participate and two endorsements or references. 25 | Thursday, January 15, 2015 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com Leslie Ashworth plays the violin in her Oakville home.
