The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday May 28, 2003 - B3 Food, fun at all-day picnic As a final celebration of the 50th anniversary of Oakville's first Portuguese immigrants, an all-day picnic has been scheduled for Saturday. From 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at St. Joseph's Portuguese Roman Catholic Church grounds, located at 2451 Bronte Rd., attendees will enjoy a free barbeque complete with fresh sardines, com bread and deli cious Portuguese sausage, as well as entertainment and activities. At the main stage will be performances by the London Folkloric Dance Group at 1 p.m., the Hamilton Folkloric Dance Group at 3 p.m. and the Oakville Folkloric Dance Group at 4 p.m. There will also be a cash bar, disc jockey, a kids comer and a Sueca tournament (a Portuguese card game). In partnership with the W hite Oak Folk Club the Thursdays in Black Coffee House will feature the following performers: Daisy DeBolt; a high energy, multi-talented performer with more than 30 years of performance experience DeBolt is Canada's queen of avant-garde. Whether she's playing man dolin, accordion or guitar, her songs and music swing widely across every genre and style. From gospel to polka, folk, country, blues and jazz, there is no one musical category that can contain this remarkable woman's talent. DeBolt has four albums to her credit `Live Each Day with Soul,' `Back to the Sugar Camp,' `Just Mountain Songs,' `I Can,' `Soul Stalking' and is in the process of producing another. She will be joined by Marg Stowe on guitar and percussionist Michelle Josef. Tannis Slimmon is a recent recipient o f the Woman of Distinction Award in her home town of Guelph. In the critically acclaimed trio The Bird Sisters, Slimmon toured Canada and United States doing what she loves best, harmonizing and layered vocals. She has sang back up vocals for many Canadian groups including the Barenaked Ladies and the Reostatics. Slimmon has recently gone solo with her album `Oak Lake,' an engaging collection of songs representing her luscious range of vocal talent and exceptional songwriting ability. Laura Bird is known for her versatile smoky alto voice and is a passionate, rising talent in the Canadian music scene. Her CD `Dreamwalker' has received enthusiastic airplay across Canada with the CBC, special folk music shows and internet radio and with stations in the United States. Her songwriting is honest, powerful and reflective. She is the type of per former who leaves her audiences with goose bumps. Restless Eve won first prize national winners of the CBC Radio's `This morning' Who knows Junos contest for their awesome rendition o f James G ordon's `Frobisher Bay.' Nadine Feldman, Linda Kreiner, Carla Jensen and Judy Donnelly make up the voices of Restless Eve. In true a capella style their voices blend and harmonize as they cross cul tures taking their audiences on a world tour through Africa, France, Portugal, Spain. Croatia, and back to Canadiana, jazz standards and original tunes. The Thursdays in Black Coffee House will be held at the Knights of Columbus Hall at 1494 Wallace Rd. Tracy Harrison, Public Education Co-ordinator at SAVIS will emcee the evening and provide poetry interludes between performances. The Public Education program at SAVIS, was developed in the early 1990s by Lynda Levin, who just retired this year. It is a very important program in the elementary and secondary schools o f Haltop and in some schools is an essen tial component of the health, law and family studies curricu lum. Presentations on bullying, sexual harrassm ent, date/aquaintance sexual assault, drug induced sexual assault and violence in relationships are made to students, teachers and parents in the schools.
