B4 - T h e O a k v ille Beaver, Wednesday November 10, 2004 Afghanistan school director visits St. Vincent's to say thank you By W ilm a B iokhuis BEAVER FOCUS EDITOR How do you say thank you? Nazaneen Majeed. director o f a school in Afghanistan, wanted to say `thank you' in person to St. Vincent's School, which had given $7,100. It was the largest single donation she received from an individual school. The money was raised at the St. Vincent's Ladies Night Out for Charity last May that raised about S15,(XK) for Canadians in Support of Afghan Women (CSAW) and Sexual Assault and Violence Intervention Services (SAVIS) of Halton. The money was divided between the two organizations. She was in Canada attending a con ference in Calgary, and asked to visit St. Vincent's before going home - just to say thank you. "I'm very thankful to you and your parents," she told a recent assembly. "You've given our children a lot of help." The money will be used to pay the annual salaries of nine teachers at the Nazoo Anna Education Centre for Afghan Refugees and purchase school supplies. Majeed is founder and director of this school that currently has about 5,000 stu dents in PeshawaL Pakistan and Jalalabad, Afghanistan in both elemen tary and high school levels. One high school in Jalalabad alone has 3,320 stu dents. More than 450 of her graduates have gone to university to become doc tors. engineers and teachers. Her current project is to establish a public library. Three students presented her with books donated by St. Vincent's. "I'm very thankful," she told the studenLs. "My students are very happy," said Majeed who has taught for 24 years. `T hey're happy to come to school. They want to learn. "We're very poor. We need every thing, from books for our library to tents for classrooms. "We have nothing, no chairs and no desks - there's nothing for the teachers and students." Bom in Jalalabad. Majeed studied at Kabul University, and opened her school in 1979 in her hometown. "Then, in 1979, something unbeliev able happened," said Linda Middaugh of CSAW, who took Majeed to St. Vincent's. Physiatrist aims to find source of pain, injury and disability (Continued from page B3) "My challenge is to find the source of pain, injury or disability even when standard diagnostic tests don't reveal specific problems or when the normal course of treatment is not yielding the expected healing results," explains Dr. Lang. "I often deal with a lot of chronic problems that won't go away or simply can't be cured." "My goal is to improve the patient's quality of life by restoring function or at least improving their condition to its optimal point so they can resume their regular activities as comfortably as pos sible," continues Dr. Lang. `Then if they still have residual impairment I help them adapt to their condition or disabili» ty, or find ways to work around it." The inpatients Dr. Lang treats are often recovering from stroke, brain injury, spinal cord injury, a joint replace ment or amputation of a limb. "My job is to direct the medical component of my patient's rehabilitation and deal with any complications that might arise," explains Dr. Lang. "I work very closely with a multi-dis ciplinary rehabilitation team which includes the patient's nurse, physiothera pist, speech therapist and occupational therapist, as well as other involved med ical and paramedical professionals." Dr. Lang sees a lot of chronic condi tions such as shoulders, neck or joint pain as well as patients who struggle with various neurological conditions like spinal cord injury, spina bifida or cere bral palsy at his outpatient clinic. His work also involves examining gait problems, providing bracing or pros thetics and administering various "trig ger point injections" used to help ease pain and restore function in cases of ten dinitis and muscle inflammations. In addition. Dr. Lang conducts EMG and Nerve Conduction studies to diagnose nerve disorders such as carpal tunnel syndrome and pinched nerve roots. "Dr. Lang brings a wealth of knowl edge to the medical community at Halton Healthcare with his specialty. He will be a great resource for our physi cians, physiotherapists, speech and occu pational therapists and many other healthcare professionals at both our hos pital sites," explains Dr. Sol Stem, HHS Chief of Staff. "His expertise and guid ance will improve our ability to rehabili tate and restore patient function and will no doubt touch many, lives in Halton in a very positive way." A native of Kitchener-Waterloo, Dr. Lang completed his medical degree at the University of Western Ontario in London and finished his residency in physical medicine and rehabilitation in Edmonton, Alberta. Settling with his wife and infant son in the community of Milton, he joined HHS this past July, 2004. Patients need a referral from their family doctor or specialist to see a physi atrist.
