"We've received lots of awards before, but this is special because it's our first international one," said Adcom president Janice Johnston, also a Halton resident. It was in June of this year that the company received word about winning the award, which was established 12 years ago and is the American design industry's most prestigious awards program. The 2002 corporate calendar Adcom designed was entered into the competition by its client, a major transportation company operating from Toronto's Pearson International Airport. Adcom's president and her right-hand woman said they were flattered by the company's response. "There were several people with all different kinds of objectives and expectations, who had to approve the design, and yet, ours was unanimous ly selected," said Adcom's senior account director Leanne Speers. The calendar competed with entries from 14 different countries -- including Australia, Brazil, Canada. Denmark, Greece, Hong Kong, Israel, Japan, Korea, Singapore, Switzerland, the United Kingdom and the United States. "This is the first time their (the client's) execu tive calendar has won an international award," Johnston said, adding, "And it was our first job for this client, so it was a great way to start off." For the project, which was distributed to execu tive targets during the Christmas season, Johnston and her staff were responsible for developing the cal endar's theme, creative expression, and production. "We had to determine the size, format, layout and colours," Johnston said, adding, "It was an intensive project. And it's very contemporary and quite bold. We consider it a leading edge design." In the end, the Oakville firm chose to present the product in an oversized format, ensuring it was user friendly and effectively depicting the professional photography commissioned for the assignment. Each month features a large image with concise factual copy, written by Adcom, to inform and edu cate readers about the client's work at the airport. Johnston and Speers said they had only three _ weeks to conceive, execute and complete the piece, which was delivered on time and on budget. "It went very smoothly," said Speers. "Everyone here believes in working together to get the job done. It was a seamless effort," Johnston added. Established 20 years ago, Adcom is a full serv ice marketing and advertising company which has grown to incorporate 10 full-time staff and 20 reg ular clients. It has also recently become the agency of record for Halton Region. Complete with on site studio, Johnston said, "There's not much we can't do regarding communications." In addition to the ASTRID, Johnston said that over the years, the firm has received roughly 40 local awards for its work with clients at the inter national, national and regional stage. They include project of the year, best product design, best brochure, best architectural design award (high rise condominium floor plan), best advertising campaign (best magazine advertising), and best signage, to name a few. Included in the program are such topics as: identifying mar ket opportunities, selecting man ufacturer's agents, banking con siderations for U.S. sales and provincial and federal govern ment support. The registration fee is $150 per participant and to qualify a company must have been in business for one year and have a manufacturing or service base in Ontario.
