Alka Sahai one of Canada's Outstanding Principals by John Bkila Oakville Beaver Staff 15 | Thursday, January 29, 2015 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com Oakville principal Alka Sahai was recently named one of Canada's Outstanding Principals for 2015 by The Learning Partnership program. The principal of Captain R. Wilson Public School says she's proud to have won the award and credits her students and staff for the recognition. "It's such an honour to be recognized by The Learning Partnership and my community as one of Canada's Outstanding Principals. I am proud to represent the Halton District School Board, which continues to set high standards in educational practice for all staff to ensure student success," said Sahai, who will receive her award in February. The recognition honours the "unique and vital contributions" of principals in publiclyfunded schools, according to The Learning Partnership. This year, 40 principals across every Canadian province and territory were chosen by a national selection committee on the basis of their contributions to their respective schools and communities. "As a principal, the board (HDSB) has provided me with a plethora of professional growth and leadership opportunities," said Sahai. I don't stand alone in accepting this award, as I have also had the support and encouragement of many mentors, staff and my family. However, students ultimately empower me to embrace my role. The ability to work with our young people and our future leaders is truly rewarding. principal, Captain R. "We are so pleased that Alka Sahai has been recognized for her leadership and dedication to students," he noted. "Alka joins past winners of this award from the Halton District School Board, and is a member of a large group of exceptional Halton principals." The Learning Partnership invites nominations of principals from school boards, colleagues, parents, teachers, students and community members. Winners attend a week-long leadership course at Toronto's Rotman School of Management in late February. The 2015 winners join the ranks of the National Academy of Canada's Outstanding Principals, which has more than 350 members.
