Woman dies after crash on Westoak Trails by Michael Gregory Oakville Beaver Staff 5 | Friday, January 30, 2015 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com An Oakville woman has died in the wake of a crash that saw a car leave the roadway and strike a street sign Wednesday, Halton police said. Emergency services personnel were dispatched to the intersection of Westoak Trails Boulevard and Calloway Drive at 1:40 p.m. for a call about a single motor vehicle collision. The vehicle was travelling eastbound on Westoak Trails Boulevard when it veered off the road while proceeding through the intersection and struck a street sign on the south side of the boulevard, police said. Several residents in the area came to the aid of the 74-year-old driver and "when emergency services personnel arrived on scene, care was provided for the driver who was subsequently transported to a local hospital," according to police. Westoak Trails Boulevard, near the collision scene, was partially closed while the Collision Reconstruction Unit investigated. Police determined the woman had suffered a medical event while driving and was later pronounced dead in hospital. The woman's name is not being released. Bill was predeceased by his dear wife Mary Ellen Sawyer (nee Willick) and his father Wayne Sawyer. He is survived by his mother Halen Sawyer, daughter Theresa (Martin) Wardrop and grandson Connor, his sisters and brothers John (Marianne) Sawyer, Susan (Pierre) Gagnon, Barbra Parker and Patrick (Nancy) Sawyer along with nephews James Sawyer, Robert (Tiffany) Sawyer, Stephen Sawyer, Calvin Sawyer, Nicholas Sawyer and Joey Gagnon. Bill will also be missed by the Willick family, and especially by his mother-in law Audrey. Born in Chatham Ontario, Bill grew up in Oakville and spent most of his adult life living in the Niagara Region. Bill was an accomplished musician and was happiest while performing with his friends in the Clan MacFarlane Pipe Band and later the Niagara Regional Police Pipe Band. Between performances at highland games Bill worked as a mechanic and later as a transport driver, most recently at Pinder Transport in Winona. Bill loved his life on the road. Bill was a proud member of St. Andrew's Masonic Lodge No. 661 A. F. & A. M., G. R. C. in St. Catharines. He had a gruff exterior that sometimes hid a very big heart. Bill touched many lives as was evidenced by the numerous friends and colleagues, who took the time to visit, call and write while he was in the hospital. Often loud and boisterous, Bill always marched to the beat of his own drum. He was loved by many for his willingness to help, his generosity, spirit and loyalty. We would like to thank the staff and volunteers at The Hamilton General Hospital, The West Lincoln Memorial Hospital, The Juravinski Hospital, Joseph Brant Hospital, and The Carpenter Hospice. Anyone wishing to commemorate Bill's life is asked to make a donation in his name to any of the institutions listed above. Estate Planning 101 Presented by: Sharon D.
