With four branches and a Bookmobile service, the Library is never too far away for most users. When you are unable to get to the Library d ue to a p h y s ic a l d is a b ility , h o w e v e r, Community Services' volunteers help bring Library service home! The Community Services Department at the O akville P ublic L ibrary caters to the needs o f the sh u t-in L ibrary user. W hen restricted to home or a health care facility due to a permanent or temporary disability or illness, delivery arrangements can be made by c a llin g th e C o m m u n ity S e rv ic e s Department. O nce re g iste re d w ith th e C o m m unity Services Department, library staff record the user's reading interests and a convenient delivery time. Deliveries are available either once every two weeks or once a month. Staff select books (regular and large print) or talk ing books (for the visually handicapped) according to the special interests and reading habits o f the borrow er. W hen items have been selected and checked out, the Library's Community Services volunteers become the c ritica l ele m e n t in e n su rin g hom eb o u n d patrons receive service. "Our volunteers play two ro les," noted M a rg a re t G a tt, S u p e rv is o r-C o m m u n ity Services, "to ensure that the shut-ins are get ting reading which they enjoy and to keep library staff aware o f the reading prefer ences of the shut-in." In 1967, only one volunteer provided an inform al library delivery service. In 1972, this service developed into Shut-In Service and B ooks-B y-M ail. T oday the O akville Public L ib rary 's home delivery service is being maintained through the help of 30 car ing and dependable volunteer drivers: volun teers who commit to a few hours every two weeks and who act in the varied roles of dri ver, library liaison, and friendly visitor. With over 100 Library users registered for this special service, the volunteers are kept busy. "Volunteers are the backbone of the ser v ic e ," ad d e d G a tt. " T h ey are the link betw een (library staff) and our shut-ins. Very often new friendships develop and for the housebound a visit from the library vol unteer can be the highlight o f the week; a time when they can exchange book talk or just chat. Their services are invaluable to the Oakville Public Library and the communi ty." The service, which is run by two full-tim e sta ff and 17 volunteers, handles enquiries about community-based organizations, groups and services.
