The announcement coincided with the celebration of Family Literacy Day on Jan. 27. The campaign, which runs until Monday, Feb. 16 (Family Day), asks 500 HIPPY families to support parents outside the preschool program and encourage them to read to their children for 10 minutes daily. "This program will build on the leadership skills of HIPPY parents by providing a structured opportunity to share their knowledge about early literacy with other parents," said June Cockwell, founder and coordinator of HIPPY Oakville. "First Book Canada will provide 5,000 free books and TD has provided the necessary funding to the program." Each participating family received three books on Family Literacy Day and those who achieve @ HIPPY campaign encourages reading & Spring Preview! the campaign goal by Family Day will receive a certificate and one additional book. "The goal of the Adopt-A-Reader program is to encourage 1,000 families (500 HIPPY families and 500 non-HIPPY families) to read a total of 150,000 minutes over 15 days," said Cockwell. "Children's literacy is a true passion and priority for TD. Through our sponsorship of programs such as the `Adopt-A-Reader' campaign, we encourage adults to help children learn to read at home, in school and in public libraries," said Frank McKenna, deputy chair of TD Bank Group. "We're proud to help bring great books to Canadian families in need across the country in collaboration with First Book Canada."
