Minor peewees win International Silver Stick A last-minute invitation to the recent International Silver Stick championships in Newmarket, the Oakville minor peewee AA1 Rangers took full advantage. The Rangers -- who narrowly missed out on qualifying for the competition, losing to North Toronto in the final of the regional tournament in Whitby -- were added to the field after a Cincinnati squad withdrew. Oakville won three of four round-robin games, dumped the host Newmarket Redmen 3-2 in the semifinals and then claimed the International Silver Stick title with a 3-1 victory over, of all teams, North Toronto in the final. Members of the Rangers team are Aaron Madock, Law Dougan, Ainsley Delacourt, Ryan Abraham, Carter Real, Will Blakely, Aidan Hughes, Sam Ostafin, Nicholas Howden, Michael Doherty, Mark Swei, Joel Zarowny, Bowen Mahoney, Brant Angove, Dylan Sheridan, Hunter Greenhalgh and Carson Wiggins. Oswald was victorious in the women's 15-and-over 50-metre butterfly and 100m individual medley. Djurfeldt's wins came in the men's 13-14 50m butterfly and 100m freestyle. Ho reached the wall first in the open men's 50m freestyle and 100m butterfly. Other individual event champions were Aquinas's Panos Papangelakiws (open men's 200m freestyle), George Papangelakiws (open men's 200m individual medley) and Omar Lozano (men's 15-and-over 50m butterfly), Oakville Trafalgar's Scott Love (men's 15-over 200m freestyle), Alex Hayman (men's 15-and-over 100m breaststroke) and Oscar Sharland (open men's 100m backstroke), T.A. Oakville Trafalgar's Xander Don-Wauchope, Mohamed Elmarsafawi, Albert Nguyen, Haubi Geladi, Eugene Mech, Filip Pesevski and Louis Sharland were part of victorious relay teams, as were Aquinas's Matthew Harris and Garth Webb's Claire Sutherland, Branyce Wong, Saskia Peloquin and Kristen Smith. Oakville Trafalgar finished second overall in the meet standings, winning the senior boys' title and the open swimmers championship. The Golden Horseshoe Athletic Conference finals will be held Feb. 12 at McMaster, with top performers advancing to the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations meet next month.
