Adams crosses from Conservative to Liberal camp by Michael Gregory Oakville Beaver Staff 5 | Thursday, February 12, 2015 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com Months after quitting the nomination race in the new Oakville-North Burlington riding, Mississauga-Brampton South MP Eve Adams has announced she's leaving the Conservative Party and joining Justin Trudeau's Liberals. The surprising move quashed any rumour there may have been that Adams was considering a return to Mississauga municipal politics. "I cannot support mean-spirited leadership that divides people, instead of bringing them together," Adams said. "I want to work with someone who inspires, not with fearmongers and bullies." Adams' departure places her among some two-dozen Conservative MPs who will not be seeking re-election under the Conservatives in the upcoming federal election in October. "I am very concerned for the direction our country is heading in under Stephen Harper, and I strongly believe it is time for a leader who can steer Canada in a more positive, productive direction," Adams said Monday. "I am proud to stand behind a leader like Mr. Trudeau, who has demonstrated humanity, compassion, and decisiveness when serious issues present themselves." Conservative Party President John Walsh said Adams was informed on Jan. 29 that she wouldn't be allowed to run for the Party in Mississauga-Brampton South MP Eve Adams is shown with Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau at a news conference on Monday morning. The formerly Conservative MP , who had unsucessfully tried to secure the Conservative Party nomination for the new Oakville-North Burlington riding, crossed over to the Liberal Party Monday. | photo courtsey eveadams.ca the upcoming election due to "misconduct" during the Oakville-North Burlington nomination race. Adams, he said, had requested she be able to run for the Conservative nomination in a "new seat." "I communicated clearly that our Party takes our nomination rules and procedures seriously, and we made a commitment to run fair and open nominations, and any misconduct from candidates, including caucus members, would not be tolerated," Walsh said. It's unclear where Adams will run in the fall election, but she's indicated it will be somewhere in the GTA. On Tuesday, media reports were suggesting Adams was eyeing Finance Minister Joe Oliver's seat in Toronto's Eglinton-Lawrence riding. That was confirmed by Adams Wednesday. Locally, Oakville Ward 6 Town Councillor Max Khan has been nominated to represent the Liberals in Oakville-North Burlington, and former Halton Healthcare Services CEO and president John Oliver in Oakville. Karin Gould was selected in September as the Liberal candidate for the Burlington, and the riding association in Milton has not yet scheduled a nomination meeting. A Liberal Party spokesperson said Adams is required to go through the same approval process as any other prospective candidate for the upcoming election, and a local riding associations' nomination could not be overturned. Currently no date is set for the Liberal nomination meeting in Milton. Adams served for eight years as a city and regional councillor in Mississauga before being elected to the House of Commons in 2011. see Adams on p.7 INJURED? I Can Help!
