Jamie Smith · Oakville Beaver World Youth Day an inspiration By Lindsey Craig OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF Although Toronto festivities have come to an end, the spirit of World Youth Day is living on through hundreds of thousands of young pilgrims from across the globe who have returned to their communities, inspired to make the world a better place. Among those hundreds of thousands of pilgrims were more than 260 Oakville youth, now returned to their daily lives after what many have called "a life changing experi ence." One of those young people is Mark Gamez, 16, a youth group member at St. Michael's Parish and student at St. Ignatius of Loyola Secondary School. O f everything he experienced in World Youth Day, he said he'll most remember learning the impor tance of serving one's community - which he's now determined to do. "I learned that people, especially youth, should be out there volunteering in the com munity. And that's the main thing I'm going to remember," he said. "Because that's when you actually start experiencing your faith, when you're out there giving your time," he continued. As Student Council President, Gamez said he's now most inspired to take what he's learned from his World Youth Day involve ment and apply it to his role within the school. (See `World' page C2)
