"This group is really enthusiastic and passionate about what they've taken on," said the regional chair. "They are all eager to proceed and come up with a positive solu tion." Savoline made her com ment Friday immediately fol lowing the initial gathering of the 15-member panel charged with addressing emergency housing issues like communi ty need, location criteria, housing operations, safety and security, the planning process and public consulta tion. Savoline stressed, howev er, that no specific sites will be considered until the neces sary criteria is settled. "If a site can be chosen at the end of the process, it will be a bonus," she said, reiterat ing that no sites are currently on the table and that the "We want to hear from the community. We're reaching out as much as possible" · Halton Regional Chair Joyce Savoline Salvation Army has with drawn its planning applica tion for a property on Eighth Line. In addition to Savoline, the Working Group includes Oakville Mayor Ann Mulvale, Salvation Army Major Ray Braddock, Major Ken Ritson from the Sally A nn's Divisional Head quarters, Iroquois Ridge Ratepayers Association presi dent Joyce Stephenson, Halton Regional Police Deputy Chief Gary Crowell, Transitions for Youth execu tive director Colin Darte, Halton Social Planning Council executive director Joey Edwardh and Trafalgar Chartwell Residents Asso ciation president Chris Stoate. Citizen-at-large members include former Halton Regional Police Chief Peter Campbell, former Ward 2 councillor Kathy Graham, former school trustee Linda Lane, Mattamy Homes presi dent Peter Gilgan, business woman Laura Kupferschmidt and David Carter, formerly of the Waterfront Regeneration Trust. According to Savoline, all members are professional people with the best interests. of the community at heart, so she does not expect meetings to get sidetracked by in-fight ing or unimportant issues. Key to the members' focus on criteria and communica tion is the "pivotal" Sept. 19 meeting, which Savoline explained will provide an opportunity for the public to address the panel directly. "We want to hear from the community," said Savoline, adding that residents can also comment through a website, dedicated phone line, by mail and by dropping off com ments. "We're reaching out as much as possible." The committee is sched uled to meet on its own for the last time on Oct. 18, after which it will convene on Oct. 21 to present its findings to the community. Along the way, says Savoline, every effort will be made to keep the process open, with media releases and Web site information issued after every meeting and avail ability to the press. "We are very concerned about transparency," she said. "It's important to keep the public informed." Although this initiative is a three-way effort along with the Salvation Army and the Town of Oakville, Savoline said the Region is also com mitted to success, as evi denced by the staff resources (legal, planning etc.) avail able at every meeting so that there's no lag time waiting for answers. "We don't have the luxury of time for that," she said. This is a fundraiser for Halton-Hamilton-Wentorth Breast Cancer Support Services (BCSS), a survivor created self-help organization dedicated to the support of men and women with breast cancer. Organizers hope to advance last year's target of almost $50,000. The money raised from this event ensures that BCSS this center continues to provide programs, current information and education on the detection of breast cancer. Through support meetings, educational resources and sometimes just a voice of experience, the BCSS is making a difference in people's lives. Now in its eighth year, the Tournament of Hope continues with the enthusiastic drive of many dedicated volunteers and cor porate sponsorships. "I can't believe the amount of hours invested in this project by so many," says tour nament co-chair Shirley Sveda of Atlas Van Lines (Canada) Ltd. "I'm always amazed at the dedication of our volunteer team as well as the invaluable support of our corporate sponsors." The tournament will see over 300 golfers take to the green at the cost of $100 each which includes a day of golf plus dinner, entertainment by the Pack Rats and both silent and live auctions at the Burlington Con vention Centre. Registration is limited and pre registration is required. To book a single or four some, contact BCSS at 905-6342333. Tickets are also available for the dinner and auc tion only.
