Mix of salt, weather caused fires continued from p.5 pole exploded and landed on the highway. OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt said no one was injured and the highway was briefly closed while the debris was cleaned up. Halton police closed South Service Road, between Dorval Drive and Third Line, where the damaged pole is located. Oakville Fire Deputy Chief Andy Glynn said crews were kept busy with upwards of five other hydro fires in town. "We had our crews dispersed to multiple scenes standing by until (Oakville) Hydro could shut down the hydro, and then we could extinguish the fire and the poles," he said. Halton police spokesperson Sgt. Chantal Corner said a hydro pole at the intersection of Wyecroft Road and Kerr Street was also sparking, causing pieces to break off. Police closed a stretch of road while firefighters extinguished the minor blaze and hydro workers completed the necessary work. Oakville Hydro said Wednesday morning it was still working to compile information on what was "a busy night." Glynn said the mix of melting snow and salt, combined with the light drizzle, both contribute to fires sparking around this time of year. "It causes the hydro poles to short out in some cases, or the electrical insulators to fail because of the freezing rain and the salt," he said. "We advise residents to keep a safe distance from any downed hydro lines and call 911." The OPP reported upwards of 250 minor collision calls Tuesday throughout the GTA, while Halton police dealt with nearly two dozen accidents within the region. Plows cleared major routes during the day and early evening and then began clearing residential streets Tuesday night. 9 | Thursday, March 5, 2015 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com Oakville Hydro crews work (at right) on a hydro pole that broke after a weather-related fire (left). This was one of half a dozen such incidents that kept Oakville firefighters occupied Tuesday night. In one instance, the westbound QEW was closed to allow for cleanup after a fire-damaged hydro pole fell onto the highway. Some areas lost power as the fires occurred and subsequent repairs were carried out. | photos by Andrew Collins - special to the Beaver CORRECTION NOTICE GLENLEVEN CHRYSLER - 2015 Dodge Journey Canada Value Package auto, keyless enter N go.
