Cottagers heard boat crash (Continued from page 1) and the operator increased his speed." About two minutes later, the boat struck the west side of Elephant Island and became stuck on the rock. Belisle said the impact destroyed the boat and jolted those onboard, causing mostly minor injuries, ranging from bruises to lacerations. "Each passenger helped one another (after the crash)," said Belisle. Two cottagers standing on a nearby dock heard a loud bang and cries for help and, along with a third cottager, locat ed the stranded vessel. Before they went onto the water to help, emergency per sonnel were called. They arrived on scene a short time later. Belisle said volunteer firefighters with the Douro-Dummer Fire Department and paramedics stabilized the stranded boaters and brought them to shore where ambulances were waiting. While the OPP continues to investigate the crash, Belisle .warned late-season boaters to be careful on area waterways. "It's getting darker faster and the water is colder. Boaters should take more caution and dress for the occasion," she said. "Navigate within your means of sight and cut your speed down to give yourself a better chance to avoid any mishaps."
