Club boosts self-esteem, creates role models The Club -- a popular non-profit, after-school home work helpers initiative -- has expanded to Lome Skuce Public School. Already under way at St. James and St. M ichaels Catholic Schools, and Morden and Oakwood Public Schools, The Club started at Lome Skuce Nov. 25 thanks to a three-year expansion grant from the province and the Ontario Trillium Foundation. The Club currendy offers a free, after-school tutoring service to 96 elementary school students from Grades 3 -8 in Oakville. "As far as we know, it is the only service of its kind in the community," says Club Co-ordinator Carole Shepherd. "Being a member of The Club provides stu dents, their tutors and our supervisors with a sense of belonging, a sense of purpose and an opportunity to grow. This can make a difference in their own lives, as well as the community at large." Students are matched to a personal tutor/homework helper and meet once a week after school hours under the leadership of an adult volun teer who possesses a back ground in education. At Lome Skuce, 16 students will work with their new tutors on Monday afternoons. "The majority of our vol unteers are local high school students who have shown a strong interest in working with kids in our community," says Elaine Collins, The Club's Volunteer Co-ordina tor. "Their volunteer hours are credited towards the 40-hour community service require ment for high school gradua tion but many who already have their hours, volunteer just because they love the experience and the interaction with the kids. Adults in the community contribute their time as well." Completing homework assignments obviously helps students learn and achieve better marks, but there are also some intangible benefits inherent in the program: the children's self-esteem devel ops and their tutors become positive role models and men tors to the students as well. The Club -- a recognized program of Ontario's Promise -- is made possible through the support of The United Way of Oakville, The Ontario Trillium Foundation and The Rotary Clubs of Oakville.
