"The houses," Dobson said of her study of several doorways, "serve as a m etaphor for sameness, assimilation, consumer cul ture... There's a comfort in dressing the way other peo ple dress and living in a house like everyone else's -- it means you're not being talked about. You're not the centre of attention." Dobson was bom in New Brunswick. Her father, as well as her grandfather, were developers. As a result, Dobson spent a lot of time around new housing devel opments, and, during a talk she gave last week, she told a story of driving through these half-built communities with her father, dressed in her best after church on Sunday, looking for vandals. She moved to Germany with her family and discov ered a place with deep histo ry, and then she and her fam ily moved back to the rela tive newness of New Brunswick subdivisions. She then, this time without her family, moved to the forests of British Columbia and then to downtown Toronto. Finally, she settled in Oakville to raise a family. For that matter, if you live in Milton or any community where sprawling development has and continues to alter the landscape and sur roundings, go see this show. Susan D obson's Spraw l is made up of photographs that are not so much snippets of sub urbia but snippets straight out of your life and your personal culture. To anyone who has spent time in this town, espe cially to people who have grown up here, these photographs can stir deep emotions. Here is your doorway. You have a new inter locking brick walkway and burlap covered shrubbery; you have an ornamental number plaque and a floral door mat; your doormat is ragged from winter wear and your front step is chipped to boot; you have a wreath and copi ous garland; you have a no smoking sign; you have a pretty mailbox; but underneath the reno- U n i t e d W ^ y o f O a k v ille wishes he best o f th e season to you a n d your lo ve d ones To make a donation to help those in need, please call UnitedWay of Oakville at (905) 845-5571 Tyler Anderson · Special to the O akville Beaver Photographer Sue Dobson stands surrounded by her work during the recent grand opening of her exhibit at the Centennial Square Art Gallery. a dirt road in my part." It is now, as you probably know, a four-lane main thor oughfare. A street that once divided the residential lands from the farmlands became, after the construction of the Smith-Triller Viaduct, a road that connects increasingly dense residential lands with more of the same. "1 started to see the landscape around me changing instead of me moving into new landscapes." Here is a bulldozer in the muddy landscape. Look, you can see your house in the background, where the bull dozer dug a hole, the begin nings of your house, only 3 months ago. The bulldozer will continue to move north until it either hits the Tundra landscape of Nunavut or until the sprawl ceases. My money's on the former. Expecting a second child, Dobson went shopping for a new house and was shown around the new develop ments by her real estate agent. "I w asn't comfortable buying in a new subdivision.
