While Town staff say there is no practical treatment for oak decline at this point, they have established three forest monitoring plots to record the health of the trees and predict the rate and spread of oak decline over the next several years. The Town is also monitoring trees close to the residences that back onto the park, to ensure the problem doesn't spread onto private property. However, McFarland added that oak decline is generally seen in trees that aren't watered or fertilized and become weakened and susceptible to insects and disease. The park, which contains about 3.5 kilometres of trails, is to remain closed until Town forestry staff decides it is safe again for public use. "It's not just branches falling off -- it's entire trees falling over," noted McFarland. Forestry staff will lead several guid ed informational tours through the park to explain the issue of oak decline to interested members of the public. TALK TO OUR i EXPERTS IN RED!
