He came across a flock of wild birds that were obviously agitated and being loud. The 78-year-old security guard said he figured there was a raccoon nearby and continued on his way. That was when he saw a little yellow budgie lying on the path. "I talked to it because budgies get talked to," Reddie said in his soft Scottish accent. "And I put out my finger and sure enough it hopped right on to my finger." Reddie hustled the budgie inside and held it close to keep it warm. "It was cold by this time. You could feel the little guy was (freezing)," he said. "I figured another half an hour, or an hour, and it would have been too late." As the bird got warmer, it became more aggressive, nipping at his fingers, Reddie recalled with a chuckle. He secured the bird in a milk jug and called the humane society, which came to take the bird. Shortly after, Wilson and Frisbee were reunited. "I can't believe I got him back," she said. Wilson, a retired senior who lost her husband five years ago, explained why she calls Frisbee the bird with nine lives. She said this isn't the first time he's gone on an adventure. She said she met Frisbee at the Oakville and Milton Humane Society (OMHS) shelter last December. He was in a cage in the foyer and she was drawn to his big personality. "I couldn't leave him there. He was just so (friendly). As soon as I sat down, he came right over," she said. "He was so interactive. He's like a little person in a bird body." Wilson taught Frisbee to be a hand bird and soon discovered he could talk. He says "I love you," "pretty bird" and a few other phrases. He even told Wilson his name, "Frisbee." "It's just so unexpected to find this kind of big personality in such a little pea-brained body," she said. "He's just a joy. He's really a fun bird and he makes the whole world about him." Wilson went to Town Hall to personally thank Reddie for saving her beloved pet and show him her appreciation for his actions. Reddie said Wilson was quite emotional over the ordeal but he said it was all part of the job. "I didn't really do anything special," he said. "I just talked to a bird."
