The Town of Oakville Water Air Rescue Force (TOWARF), founded in 1954 by the late Fred Oliver -- a former chief of Oakville police and Ward 2 Town/ Regional councillor -- is a Canadian Coast Guard Auxiliary Unit that provides marine search-and-rescue service with the primary goal of saving lives in western Lake Ontario. On duty 32 hours a week and on call 24/7 to the Joint Rescue Co-ordination Centre (JRCC) and Halton police, during boating season (April-October), TOWARF is volunteer-based and has a trained crew of more than 75. Members of the local auxiliary unit recently took the Oakville Beaver out on Lake Ontario to demonstrate a PIW (person-in-water) exercise and chat about its services, safety tips for boaters and the 2014 Crew of the Year award it won. Crew 3 received the accolade at TOWARF's annual general meeting last month. see All on p.20 Complimentary Consultation Laser Vision Correction Only BladeLESS 905 845 EYES (3937) Suite 200 - 353 Iroquois Shore Road.
