Zero tolerance for unruliness in parks Commercial blitz results concern police Zero tolerance for unruly and unacceptable behaviour once again remains in effect for all Oakville's sports field users as another spring summer season kicks off. Inappropriate behaviour, including aggressive or bullying, foul language, public urination, littering, smoking, drinking alcohol on public property or leaving field lights on after play is finished, will not be tolerated. Action can include a verbal and/or written warning, $150 fine, permit suspension or termination of permit, depending on the severity of the incident and any prior violations. Every permit holder, including players, sports organizations, teams and residents, must follow the rules. In 2014 the Town of Oakville introduced a progressive discipline pilot project to encourage respectful behaviour on sports fields. "Oakville's core values are founded on mutual respect," Mayor Rob Burton said. "This pilot confirms our community's values and encourages a respectful and positive environment for those on and off the field." All violations can be reported online through the Inappropriate Behaviour Reporting Form. Incidents will be investigated within five days and disciplinary action, if required, will be delivered within 10 days. Permit suspensions can be appealed within 14 days. New evidence must be submitted along with a fee of $250. If the appeal is successful, the suspension will be lifted and the fee will be refunded in full, Town officials said. Regular checks by park staff will also continue, Town officials said. More than 50 per cent of the vehicles stopped in Oakville during a Halton police commercial vehicle safety blitz last week failed the basic safety inspection. Dubbed Operation Tag and Tow, the blitz saw local police partner with Peel Regional Police, Ontario's ministries of Transportation and Environment, and Halton Region. It targeted safety issues concerning commercial motor vehicles and enforced safety compliance for heavy trucks travelling in Oakville. From May 6-7, 97 vehicles were pulled over for safety inspections. Of those, 45 were taken out of service for various safety problems, including overweight 3 | Friday, May 15, 2015 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com loads, issues with brakes, tires and other assorted vehicle maintenance problems. Officers issued 158 provincial offence notices. Staff Sgt. Julie Craddock-Bijl of the Community Mobilization Bureau said police are not happy with the results. "Obviously, it is disappointing when we have such a high failure rate, but it just strengthens our resolve to do commercial vehicle enforcement," she said. "We know there are a lot of trucks out there and some will go a very long time without ever having an inspection done by police or one of the other agencies that do it.
