D2 - The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday December 18, 2002 Weekend split is indicative of Blades' fortunes lately By Sarah Elliott SPECIAL TO THE BEAVER The Oakville Blades' weekend split was indicative o f their fortunes, o f late. On Sunday, the Blades fell 6-2 to the torrid Milton Merchants, winners o f their last 15 games, and on Friday the Blades beat the cellar dwelling Brampton Capitals 4-1. Over the last month the Blades have been on a .500 clip, with a 5-5-1 record in provincial junior A west division The Blades' Jason Dopaco (#19) drew a Milton penalty on this play in the Milton M erchants' crease. Barrie Erskine · Oakville Beaver action. At the beginning of the season, they couldn't have been stronger. They started out with seven wins and one loss, beating top teams like Hamilton, Milton, and Burlington. But since then it has been a very bumpy ride for the Blades. Although they played a strong game against last-place Brampton on Friday night, the Blades gave second-place M ilton far too much leeway on Sunday, and the fast Merchants really took advantage of them. "M ilton has a very good skating team and their transition is excellent," commented the Blades' head coach Jay (See Blades' page D3) Raiders on a mission The St. Thomas Aquinas Lady Raider senior girls volleyball team appear to be on a mission. That mission involves returning to Sheridan College to claim the Halton crown that eluded them last spring. With five out of six starters back, the senior Raiders appear to be on the right track to their Halton goals as well as a possible first ever OFSAA birth for sen ior volleyball. In the past two weeks they've been very busy, claiming the Aquinas Brampton Tourney (14-0) and the Nelson H.S. Tourney (10-0). While facing some strong teams, coach Peter Szpakowski and his charges knew their toughest test would come this past Monday as they faced cross town rivals Loyola in league play (both teams entered the match undefeated after three league games). The Raiders won both games, 25-15, 27-25. In the latter game, however, the Raiders were down 24-21. "It's actually a very friendly rivalry," said coach Szpakowski, noting that a number of the players from both teams have played together for him on the Oakville Thunder rep club over the last three seasons. "Both myself and my girls are friends with the Loyola players and coaches so it's competitive, yet both teams have a lot of fun and show a lot of respect for each other. "That's the way it should be in high school sports." An example of this came when Loyola star hitter Sheena Cussen went down injured and the STA girls appeared as equally concerned as anyone else in the gym. Fortunately, Cussen returned to the match after a brief break. The Raiders coach made special mention of all six starters who include: · high flying Danielle Walker and Cheryl Silva, whose spikes from the middle have been unstoppable this sea son; · power hitters Marina Spudic and Brittany Eybergen who provide strong outside hitting and stellar defence; · off-side hitter Carley Ponzo who passes, serves and hits as steady as any one in the league; · and all star setter Meagan Tilley, whose setting is second to none in Halton. The Lady Raiders may face their toughest test, so far, as they their 16-0 record On the road this Friday at the McMaster University tournament. T tL U S ' This St. Thomas Aquinas Raiders player goes up against a Loyola player in action from Monday. Aquinas won this early season battle of unde feated teams.
