Please call Linda McCormick at (905) 845-5571 Kilimanjaro where climbers not only have to worry about the extrem e tem peratures (subtropical to wet to below freezing), but also Acute M otion Sickness (AMS) caused by the change in alti tude and air pressure. To com bat the AMS, Blanchard has been advised to take the herb Ginkgo Biloba and on the climb he will have to drink lots of water - eight litres a day. A nother way to ease AMS is to walk at a snail's pace in order to allow the body enough time to accli m atize. This means the group will gradually climb approxim ately 3,300-feet per day and descend 5,000feet, a total average walking distance of 9 m iles (4-6 hours). At the end of the experience, the group will actually have climbed one of the tallest free standing mountains in the world twoand-a-half times. "And here I thought I was just going for a walk," said Blanchard. Accom panying each Barrie Erskine · Oakville Beaver Andy and Andria Blanchard take regular hikes in prepa ration of the climb up Mount Kilimanjaro. climber will be a porter at a cost of $40 a week, who will carry their belongings up to 20 pounds. These types of adventure tours usually only accom m odate up to nine people, but this expedition will see approximately 70 people, including porters. Blanchard said the climb is being considered a major event in Tanzania. The clim ber is also advised to travel light, but that's an almost impossible feat with the long list of must-brings that are mandatory in order to successfully 8 |K '*v-: m IS Iv JL m M H %jn- # f r 'M® < / iH k make it to the top: sleeping bag, hiking sticks, a balacla va, glacier sun glasses, polypropylene t-shirts, pon cho, gloves, down jacket, parka, long underwear top, sweater, shorts, rain pants, thick and thin polypropy lene socks, hiking boots, gaiters and plenty of Ziploc bags to keep clothes dry (not the entire list!). N ever mind the bug spray, sunscreen, and toilet paper, which by the way needs to be burned after each use. The porters will also cook two hot meals per day and a packed lunch. No fire wood is used on the moun tain, so all meals are pre pared on portable kerosene and gas stoves. Blanchard is preparing to bring a cupcake and blow out the candles when he finally reaches the summit. Though the climb was slow and rigorous, the descent is a completely dif ferent story. It only takes one day - it's basically slid ing on loose gravel all the way down. Once the adventure is over, the Blanchard's are set to go on another trip. This time it's to celebrate their 25th anniversary. Once the plane returns to Amsterdam, they'll be driving to Paris. "With all that work on the climb, w e'll be needing a holiday," he said.
