Health by Bob Mitchell Oakville Beaver Staff 33 | Thursday, May 28, 2015 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com "Connected to your Community" Halton Region promotes CPR as report shows it is crucial in emergencies Halton's continuing promotion of cardio pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) training is crucial, especially after a 2013 report indicated adults in the region with less education and lower incomes were also less likely to be CPRcertified or trained in PAD (Public Access Defibrillation). According to an update provided by Hamidad Meghani, the Region's Commissioner and Medical Officer of Health, to Regional Health and Safety committee members this week, the 2013 Rapid Risk Factor Surveillance System report also revealed these same adults are also less willing to perform CPR or use a cardiac defibrillator. Last year, the Halton Region Paramedic Services, according to Meghani's report, trained 1,402 persons in CPR. Those trained included Regional staff, members of the Halton Regional Police Service and staff working for the local public and Catholic school boards. More than 500 AEDs located in Halton A total of 526 automated external defibrillator (AED) units are located throughout the region and although 59 per cent of adults have seen a PAD in a public place, according to the 2013 report, there is still much education needed because only a third of these adults knew anyone could use the units in case of an emergency. Halton Paramedic has been promoting CPR and PAD training since 2000. Statistics indicate CPR and PAD promotion is just as important as early CPR and early defibrillation in increasing survival rates after a cardiac arrest. In order to educate adults with low incomes and higher-risk groups, Paramedic Services has partnered with the Halton Multicultural Council and Halton's prenatal nutrition program participants. The report indicated early arrival of paramedics through calling 911 is also extremely important for cardiac arrest patients. Several medical studies suggest CPR performed by bystanders also plays an important role in the treatment of cardiac arrest that occurs outside a hospital. Halton saw an increase in the number of cardiac arrest patients receiving bystander CPR between 2004 and 2010. However, the rate has remained relatively stable at 34-39 per cent since 2010, according to Meghani's update. Of the 221 people who received resuscitation attempts in 2014, approximately 75 had CPR delivered by a bystander and only six had AEDs applied to them. PAD program in Halton several years The PAD program has been in place in Halton for several years with AED units located in most Regional and local municipal facilities such as arenas, pools, libraries and recreation centres. AED units are also located in all Halton police facilities, Conservation Halton parks, Sheridan College, GO Transit stations and all public and Catholic schools. Numerous private facilities also have AED units, including golf courses, retail businesses and fitness facilities. Are you sick and tired of being sick and tired?
