Greyhound's history as a racer may have helped her outrun her pursuer continued from p.1 "My dog got scared. She ran and just jumped down an embankment without really knowing where she was going. I just saw the shadow of her jumping and the coyote going after her," said Wells. "I was really, really afraid for my dog. I was worried she had been injured because greyhounds have very thin legs and they are prone to injuries." Wells' concern grew when loud snarling and squealing followed her dog's disappearance down the embankment. She called for Jackie for some time, but there was no response. Passersby helped her search the area, but, there was no sign of Jackie and no clue as to what had happened to her. Wells became more worried when the coyote returned to the area some time later. The animal displayed no aggression, but Wells couldn't help wonder what its reappearance meant for her dog. "There was the thought the coyote had caught her and done her in and now was returning home," said Wells. "Thoughts like that are running through your head." Wells contacted the Oakville & Milton Humane Society and explained the situation, but with hours going by and no sign of Jackie she couldn't think of anything else she could do from the trail. She returned to her Mowat Avenue home to follow up with the humane society. "I was absolutely beside myself," said Wells. "I rescue greyhounds. I always get one. About a year and a half ago my last one passed away very suddenly. She had a stroke and I swore I wasn't going to get another one, but of course I did." It was around this time the humane society contacted Wells telling her Jackie had been found alive. The humane society had picked up the dog as she was attempting to cross Neyagawa Boulevard. Wells believes she was making her way home following her adventure. Wells said Jackie was uninjured and speculates that because the greyhound was involved in racing before she was adopted, she was probably able to outrun her pursuer. According to the Ministry of Natural Resources, coyotes are territorial and as such, this coyote may have stopped chasing Jackie once it decided she was far enough away from its den. Had Jackie been smaller she may have been considered a food source. Wells, who acknowledges the conflict was started by her dog approaching the coyote, is calling on residents not to make the same mistake she did and keep their dogs on leashes when they are out for a walk, particularly when walking in areas coyotes are known to frequent. Town staff remind residents it is also against local bylaws to walk a dog off leash unless in a designated off leash area. Wells and Jackie still go on walks, now on leash, however, Jackie refuses to return to the Sixteen-Mile-Creek area where she had her coyote encounter. 3 | Friday, June 5, 2015 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com inside today's Editorial Artscene Beaver www.insideHALTON.com 6 23 Sports Classified 25 30 Holland Park Garden Home Hardware Oakville Marketplace Real Estate New Homes City Parent Starsky Fine Foods 2001 Audio Video TG Appliances Books and bibles, cards, g music and DVDs We are here to serve you. s is what we do.
