He said he received 14 pints of blood en route to the hospital -- more than the human body holds, or "a complete oil change" as he jokingly called it -- and then more during surgery. Even Hinchcliffe himself, didn't initially realize the gravity of the situation. "It really wasn't until several days later when I'd been moved out of ICU, (I) was kind of sitting around with some friends and family and some of the doctors, really hearing all of their firstperson accounts of how that day was for them, that it really began to sink in just how serious the injuries were and how very close it was to being a different story," he said. "That was the first time I had an appreciation of the severity of the situation." Twenty-three days after the accident, Hinchcliffe said all aspects of his recovery are ahead of schedule. "My condition improves almost daily," he said. "I still do spend a significant amount of the day kind of off my feet. The nature of my injuries were such that it kind of makes getting around a little bit difficult." He has been cleared to use an elliptical machine for short periods and has been tracking his steps daily, topping out at 4,000. Hinchcliffe said the fractured pelvis he suffered causes the most discomfort, but he is almost completely off pain medication. Usually one to make light of a situation, the emotion was evident in Hinchcliffe's voice in an interview with Sportsnet Wednesday where he first discussed the topic of missing the Toronto race. He has attended every race at the Exhibition grounds, either as a spectator or driver, since he was 18 months old. There is no date to return to racing, and Hinchcliffe made it clear there was never any doubt that he would. Even while still on a ventilator and communicating by pen and paper, one of his first questions was `When can I drive again?' Not will, when. "I think it's because we're all absolutely insane, wired wrong. We're all competitors. This is what we live to do," he said. "Despite the fact that something of this nature happened, it's something that we all acknowledge can happen. So if it does, it's not going deter us from getting in the car because we know before something like this happens that it's possible, and we still get in the car." Hinchcliffe said he will require one more surgery, likely in four to six weeks "to undo some things that were done during the emergency surgery, just to keep me healthy and safe." He'll face another recovery period following that before he's able to begin working out and regain the strength needed to control a 1,500-pound car at 200 mph.
