A 3.0-litre engine sucks in 3.0 litres of air and fuel per crankshaft revolution and ignites it to make power. Generally speaking, to make more power, you need an engine which sucks in more air and fuel -- say a 3.5-litre engine. Getting more air and fuel into the engine Air is drawn into the cylinder by the piston travelling downward in the bore As the piston travels downward in the bore, the supercharger packs more air and fuel into the cylinder But if you can't go out and get a bigger engine, how do you get more air and fuel into the existing one? One way is to increase the operating range of the engine -- the faster the engine runs, the more air that can be pumped through. But doing so is very costly and also compromises the driveability and the reliability of the engine. Another way is to supercharge the engine. Supercharging as an alternative A supercharger is essentially an air compressor that pressurizes the air within a cylinder to more than normal atmospheric pressure. This is referred to as boost and is measured in pounds per square inch. Under simplified, ideal conditions, 15 pounds of boost -- double that of normal atmospheric pressure -- would increase an engine's displacement by 100 per cent. In effect, a 3.0-litre engine would have the power of a 6.0-litre engine. Rotors are in constant contact with each other and the walls to prevent the compressed mixture tram leaking and losing boost pressure. COPYRIGH T 3. W HEELBASE COMMUNICATIONS International status boosts Toronto auto show to next level The 2001 Canadian International AutoShow in Toronto was marked by a record attendance. The unofficial count of auto show visi tors is 291,000 an increase of 4% from last year's all time record figure of 280,000. Fuelling the record attendance numbers were traditional show favourites such as the Wynn's Classic Collection which fea tured a guest appearance by automotive legend Carroll Shelby during the media days, and showcased over 30 automotive icons from other eras including a breath taking one-off Type 57 SC Bugatti. The 4x4 Test Track, introduced to North America by the Canadian International AutoShow seven years ago, reached new heights in its new location beside the South MTCC with over 1,800 test drives being taken during the period of the Show. The "Art of the Automobile" exhibit of competition finalists, sponsored by the Automobile Journalists Association of Canada, also showcased the art of Canada's most internationally recognized automotive artists Jay Koka, Ken Dallison, Alain Levesque and Jonathan Milne. Tom Tonks, general manager of the Canadian International AutoShow, summed up this year's event stating that, "we were gratified with the spectacular response to our first international effort and we look forward to refin ing and developing our inter national content and enhanced role in the coming years". The 2001 Canadian International AutoShow trav elled a different road this year as an international event sanc tioned by the Organisation international des constructeurs d'automobiles (O.I.C.A.). 8 to 8 To All Valued Audi Owners O a k v ille A u d i Inc. has been a n a u th o riz e d A u d i d e a le r fo r o v e r 2 6 years.
