A2 THE OAKVILLE BEAVER Wednesday March 7, 2001 Dog can remain in house until report tabled (Continued from page A1) Green to be in violation of a 1998 Town by law limits a residence to three adult dogs, unless it has a kennel licence Zoning at Green's Lavender Lane home would preclude such a licence. Yet, Green said she didn't purposely set out to own four dogs. "We have three dogs of our own, but have also been caring for one owned by my mother. Because of my mother's age and the serious health problems she has suf fered in recent years, it is impossible for her to keep her pet, to whom she is deeply attached," Green pleaded. The Oakville woman said that her mother had been living in London, Ontario with her pet. Meanwhile, Green has lived here for 26 years, 15 of them on Lavender Lane. So, Flynn has asked Town staff to take a look at the "compassionate grounds asso ciated with this by-law issue." It's not known how long that' 1 1 take, or if all of Green's dogs will still be living when the report is back before council. "One of the dogs may not live that long," Flynn told councillors Monday night after they agreed to his plan. "In the meantime, the by-law won't be enforced until the report comes back," said Flynn. Green had written that one of her quar tet of dogs, a bulldog, is close to its life expectancy at eight-years-old, and has required surgery for mammary tumors twice in the past year. Green said she has always had her dogs licensed and tries to make sure they don't create a nuisance for neighbours or the gen eral public. However, Oakville By-law Enforcement Manager Moira Fogarty reported that it's not up to staff to grant an exemption. B ro n te 's flo a tin g fo re s t d u e to unusual w in te r By Angela Blackburn OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF The Town of Oakville doesn't like to see any dead wood -- particularly in its harbours. While councillors battled roads full of snow to attend Monday's council meeting, they heard about a harbour full of dead wood once they got there. As soon as the meeting hit its "new business" section, Ward 1 Councillor Kevin Flynn was on his feet and pass ing around photos of a recent trip -- a trip to Bronte Harbour where he saw "hundreds of yards" of dead wood. "There's a huge accumulation of dead wood. It's part of the ice right now but I have no idea where it came from," said Flynn. "If we don't do something about it, we're going to have problems with navigation in the harbour and property damage," warned Ward 2 Councillor Fred Oliver. Ward 1 Councillor Ralph Robinson told his peers he'd heard a verbal report from Oakville's harbourmaster at a recent Harbours Advisory Committee meeting. "The harbourmaster said it's an unusual situation that happens infre quently and is due to an unusual series of thaws and freezes," reported Robinson. While the frozen wood should break up, Robinson said the harbourmaster couldn't promise positive results. "It will float out to Lake Ontario and most of it will sink," Robinson told his peers. Council did, however, ask if the har bourmaster would make a formal report on the situation. Civic Scene W ednesday, M arch 7: The H alton D istrict School Board m eets at 8 p.m. at the J.W.
