Wednesday, February 28, 2001 THE OAKVILLE BEAVER D3 OMHA1/4 finals The Oakville Rangers pee wee A rep team continue to achieve their seasonal goals. Sponsored by Marathon International and Team Invidiata Homes/Remax, the Rangers are undefeated in Tri County play off action, have won another silver medal at a tournament and have earned the right to face Thorold in the quarterfinals of the Ontario Minor Hockey Association play downs. Oakville got a bye in the first round of the play downs, by virtue of winning first place in Tri County league play with an .896 winning record. OMHA SECOND ROUND In the second round, the Rangers out pointed Owen Sound 7-3 in five games (22, 4-2, 4-3, 2-5 and 3-2). Oakville tied the first game in the series 2-2 on a last minute come-from-behind goal to force the game into overtime. The next day back in Oakville, Rangers won handily 4-2 and went to Owen Sound later in the week to win 4-3. Owen Sound kept the series alive with a 5-2 win and the Rangers returned to Owen Sound to win 32. Wrestlers advance to OFSAA Oakville will be represented by some familiar faces at the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations (OFSAA) provincial wrestling championships which run Thursday through Saturday in Guelph. Kevin Stewart of Biakelock High School and Mike Kucan of White Oaks Secondary School both advanced by winning their respective Golden Horseshoe Athletic Association (GHAC) championships this past weekend. It was Stewart's fourth consecutive G-HAC title and Kucan's second. They did it in contrasting styles. Kucan's flu bug didn't bug him as he totally dominated his weight class, winning all his matches by pins. Stewart was bothered by a shoulder which he dislocated in January and which kept him from practicing the previous five weeks. To add to his challenge, he was entered into the toughest weight class (54K) of the tourna ment. With only two wrestlers able to qualify for OFSAA, the tournament came down to a round robin format of the top three wrestlers in the weight class. The three then completed the round robin with one win and one loss. However, the big blow was struck by by Stewart in his first match against previously undefeated T.J. Shail of Georgetown when he pinned him with less than one minute to go. It was the only match between these three top wrestlers (the third was Chris Holmes of E.C. Drury) that did not finish in a close decision. Stewart received an extra two points for the pin which carried him through to the championship. Aquinas Raiders (Continued from page D1) Monday's Halton championship. Having lost the opening game (2522), Aquinas were actually down in the second game 14-4, and appeared headed for a short afternoon's work -- only this time, on the losing end. Peter Szpakowski, who coaches the Raiders along with Michelle Spears, said that everything seemed to be dropping in for Georgetown while at the same time his own troops appeared tentative and timid -- exact ly what they hadn't been all year. For that, he said, "I blasted them." The players -- many of them ben efiting from last year's championship experience -- were able to find their form and regain the momentum, he said. Aquinas also went into the champi onship last year as the favourites, at least on paper, having been undefeat ed against junior opposition in regular league play. But reputation does count for something and Georgetown went in as two-time champs, and given a contro versial home court advantage, they managed to defeat Aquinas in two straight (25-22, 25-19). This year, Aquinas players were definitely feeling a case of deja vu. But they managed to shake them selves out of it and keep history from repeating itself. Time will tell if it will be the start of a dynasty at the school. CHAMPIONSHIP TEAM ROSTER: Players ... Cheryl Silva, Shelly Visser.
