But before you go, everyone is invit ed to check out The Cottage Life Show that runs from March 30-April 1 at the International Centre. There are more than 460 exhibitors that will be displaying the latest cottage tools, toys and accessories. New this year is the Cottage Environment Centre where a variety of experts will be on hand to discuss ecowise solutions for the cottage, including renewable energy, recycling and clean wood burning. And the Cottage Bookstore returns offering novels, how-to books to tackle weekend projects and reference books on nature and the environment. The Cottage Science Centre encour ages cottagers to `think naturally' about their outside surroundings. There's also a Family Activity Centre where kids and parents can make crafts, paint a wooden cabin and sing -along with Jam Sandwich. The Cottage Pet Centre features pets and an on-site veterinarian who will offer tips on keeping your pets healthy and safe while visiting their home away from home. (S e e `S how ' p age C 6) A small range of colours, decorative use of sheen and texture, create a restful background for living. Slip into this living room and prepare to relax Natural neutrals have wide-ranging appeal (NC)-- In her private interior design practice, Jane Lockhart, spokesperson on colour and design for Benjamin Moore and host of the HGTV series One House - Two Looks, has learned what works for today's busy families. One popular style is the room shown here, which she calls Natural Neutrals. Here is her analysis of its appeal. "To succeed as a living space, this room needs two pre requisites. One is -- a well-behaved family. The other is -- a strong commitment to colour. "The main appeal of this room treatment is a sense of order. Just looking at the photograph should suggest a feel ing of calm and stability. It is 180 degrees separated from most people's daily lives, which tend to be stressful, clut tered, noisy, dominated by computers, pagers, cellphones, traffic, music, TV. Leave all that behind, settle into this room with its balanced proportions and natural colourings, and prepare to relax. "The neutral colours may be beige, but they are not bor ing. In itself, there is nothing boring about beige. Sometimes it is used in a boring way -- but this room demonstrates its potential. Contrasting textures and sheen have been used to add a new dimension to the wall sur faces. Accessories have been chosen to blend with the sub dued colouring -- which allows a wide choice of accent colours. Brown, black, gray, green, even red will comple ment the balance of this room without disrupting it. "Many people ask for greater stimulation from their liv ing environment than this room offers. Nevertheless both the style and the colouring of this room are very popular. One reason for its popularity is that it's so easy to modify it by adding accessories, furnishings, and the little details that personalize a room. "It's interesting how a living space will change over the years, as the owners' tastes develop. Sometimes they settle down into quiet, muted colours; other times they grow more confident in their relationship with colours, and begin to experiment, sometimes outrageously. In either case they'll feel comfortable with Natural Neutrals as a background for their evolving ideas. "A number of my clients have established offices in their homes, which are often in complete contrast to the regimented environment of a corporate office. They see the home office as a way to indulge their personal enthusi asms and even eccentricities. For them, the move from the home office to a living area such as Natural Neutrals draws a firm line at the end of the day." l d -SOIL INCLUDES DELIVERY Town/City limits.
