Wednesday March 14, 2001 THE OAKVILLE BEAVER A5 Group dedicated to helping teens & families get back on track FAST B y N a n c y A le xa n d e r SPECIAL TO THE BEAVER Raising teenagers is often like driving Ontario roads after a spring thaw. Try as you might to nav igate around the rough spots, you know the odds are good you're going to hit a pothole sooner or later. All you can do is hope it doesn't do any per manent damage. Life for teens can be full of potholes-- drugs, troubles fitting in at school, peer pressure, con flicts with parents-- and once again as parents we pray that any damage will be superficial. Unfortunately, we know there are many teens in our communities who can't seem to make it over the rough spots without outside help. T hat's where organizations like F.A.S.T. (Family Adolescent Straight Talk) come in. F.A.S.T. is a newly-formed, registered, charita ble organization- in Halton committed to helping troubled adolescents and their families move through difficult times in their personal lives. The program will offer professional assessment, followed by placement of the individual into a pro gram which best fits his or her needs, whether it be educational, individual counselling, family or group sessions facilitated by certified profession als. Executive director Jim Harkins said F.A.S.T. was created in response to a growing need in the community for adolescent support services, espe cially for families who cannot afford private coun selling. Cutbacks in many social service areas have created long waiting lists and forced decreases in the flexibility of hours and accessibility. The result, according to Harkins, is that many kids in need-- and their fearful and frustrated fam ilies-- aren't able to get timely help to get their lives back on track. Harkins, who is well known in Oakville for his Courage to Change counselling service, says com munity-based systems are simply overloaded. "If you're on drugs or you have a kid on drugs and want help, you don't want to wait for three months. It might be too late," he added. Having recently received its registered charita ble status, F.A.S.T. is now in the process of putting together a board of directors. Thanks to the United Way, F.A.S.T. already has a commitment for start-up costs and Harkins says he will be looking to the Trillium Foundation and the Substance Abuse Bureau for financial assis tance as well. Clients will be charged for services on a sliding scale, based on ability to pay. Those who can't afford it will be offered the service free of charge. Harkins said F.A.S.T. is appealing to the publip for donations as well, whether it be from the corporate sector, service clubs or individual citi zens. Anyone wishing further information or look ing to make a donation can contact Susan Gavigan, treasurer, at (905) 469-6340. L IM IT E D T IM E O FFE R ! DEP. New management team paying for Longhorns' old debts A story published in the Fri. March 9, 2001 issue of the Oakville Beaver may have left the impression that the Oakville Longhorns foot ball club is operating with the same manage ment as last year. In fact, management of the team is being conducted by the Oakville Longhorns Alumni Association and a change of ownership to that group is planned. The registered name of the club owed the Town of Oakville $4,745 and the new man agement group is clearing up that debt through certified cheques. "We have no particular objection to the fact that the property is going to be developed. That was inevitable because the zoning was already there. We are concerned about access over the long run and during the course of construction," said Spence. ClubLink, bought Glen Abbey last year from the Royal Canadian G olf Association (RCGA). ClubLink then sold a 5.1-acre parcel of land to CP-owned Delta Hotels, Canada's largest lux ury hotel owner/operator which will build the hotel overlooking the Abbey's picturesque val ley holes. The hotel will be located in what's now the main parking lot, beside G olf House and behind the Canadian Golf Hall of Fame and Museum -- essentially near the ravine. Construction is expected to begin this year for a spring 2003 opening -- in time for the 2003 BelL Canadian Open if the Open returns. With proper zoning in place, ClubLink offi cials hadn't expected public opposition. Baldwin said ClubLink wants to be good neighbours. She also noted that golfers at the ClubLink grounds have dealt with construction noise associated with the building the townhomes, too. "Construction is a fact of life," said Baldwin. BONUS OFFER!
