www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Friday, July 10, 2015 | 6 Sometimes you make a mistake you can x. This is a mistake that cannot be xed. - Melissa Hill, Oakville Just as our town celebrated a spectacular Canada Day festival in Bronte, we were rocked by terrible tragedy --not once, but twice. Two beloved fathers died tragically on a beautiful summer weekend. More than half a dozen Oakville children of varying ages are now left without their dad. Two women in our community have lost their partner in life and are now soldiering on to cope with grief and raise their families. We offer our sincerest condolences to the family of Chris Harper, a 50-year-old Oakville man who taught at Mississauga's Meadowvale Secondary School, a father of ve and husband. Harper was struck by a vehicle while cycling in Milton one week ago tonight. The driver of the vehicle, an Oakville woman, faces multiple charges including impaired driving. We also offer our deepest sympathy to the family of Krunoslav Segota, who, after his ATV rolled while in Kaladar, Ont. last Sunday, died of cardiac arrest en route to the hospital. In addition there was a horrendous crash on Upper Middle Road. Fortunately, both passenger and driver are expected to survive and are recuperating in hospital. Tragic incidents are a part of life. Accidents happen. Avoidable accidents as well. As Harper's wife, Melissa Hill, told her daughter after her husband's death: "Some mistakes you can x, others cannot be xed." It is those irrevocable mistakes we don't want to make. It is up to us to try to avoid them. Before the summer progresses any further, make a pact with yourself to enjoy the season safely. When driving, do so diligently. Obey the rules of the road, they exist so everyone makes it to their destination and home again -- alive and well. Above all, use common sense. When participating in sports and other holiday activities, review the best practices, learn how to have fun and be safe. We often hear how teachers say farewell to their students for the summer and then don't see one return to school because of a summertime tragedy. This year, some students in Mississauga will not see their teacher return to class in the fall. Pool and boating season is in full swing. Many residents are heading to the cottage, taking in the Pan Am Games, or have concerts, barbecues, patio stops and golf games and more penciled into their calendars. Before embarking on any summer adventure, we could all do very well to clearly remember that some mistakes can be xed, but others cannot. I do not know Rachel but, like her, I am frustrated by the apparent willingness of some community members to jettison history and character in the name of "updating" our downtown. I also do not want to throw away millions Adding a voice to frustration over downtown Letter to the Editor Production Manager Director of Distribution CHARLENE HALL KIM MOSSMAN Circulation Manager of tax dollars on ground-up redevelopment of our Central Library and Oakville Centre for the Performing Arts. I understand that there are structural issues with the pool which may mean its relocation to the old hospital grounds makes better sense. Perhaps that will result in more parkland along the creek. For a standing-room-only crowd of residents to come out on a summer weekday evening to hear 10 candidates present their platforms is nothing short of remarkable. It was wonderful to see the intense interest that Ward 6 residents have in the upcoming by-election that will decide who will voice their concerns at council. The Oakville Chamber of Commerce deserves kudos for organizing an event that engaged the community and provided real bene t for voters who had many questions for the large panel of candidates. This is the kind of civic engagement and concern for the future of the community that makes Oakville such a great place to live.
