Oakvillegreen's efforts give native biodiversity `a leg up,' says Mark continued from p.8 (CH) to uproot buckthorn to prevent it from resprouting from cut stems. A Town of Oakvillelicensed herbicide applicator was also on-hand applying herbicides to control buckthorn and other invasive plants. Oakvillegreen has been organizing community volunteers to plant trees and remove invasive species such as garlic mustard in Oakville since 2004. This was the first time the non-profit group tackled the larger, thorny buckthorn shrubs and the very aggressive dogstrangling vine. "Oakville residents care about their urban river valleys and the services and values they provide and removing invasive plant species is one way that they can help to care for them," Brock said. Town officials intend to use mulch to suppress invasive species growth. Brock said Oakvillegreen hopes to return to the area in future years to plant native species that will increase biodiversity, enhance tree cover, improve the stability of the shoreline and filter water runoff and pollutants. "Invasive plants are major threats to native species and biodiversity in our urban woodlands. Their management requires scientific best practices, coordinated community effort and public awareness," said Chris Mark, Oakville's Director of Parks and Open Space. He described Oakvillegreen's efforts as being "critical" to keeping invasive species at bay and giving native biodiversity "a leg up." Oakvillegreen does tree planting every year and encourages residents to pull garlic mustard. CH has a Pestofest each year where it's used to make pesto, Brock said. "This is the first time we've actually had a crew out pulling up invasive species," Brock said. "This is quite a pristine valley and it's environmentally sensitive. This is a natural area that follows the 14 Mile Creek." 17 | Friday, July 10, 2015 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com LANA'S B OU TIQUE Bronte Harbour 100 Bronte Road 905.847.8148 Hours: Sun & Mon 12-5 Tues-Fri 10-6, Sat10-5 Step into Style GENERAL CONTRACTING SERVICES Residential & Commercial · Painting · Carpentry · Decks & Patios · Flooring installation · Home renovation repair · Electrical · Plumbing Renovations Quality Workmanship all work guaranteed excellent customer care reliable service | www.mjpconstructioninc.com For Your Free Quote Contact Martin 416-727-4648 Opening soon!
