www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Thursday, July 16, 2015 | 18 Political party reps and faith group express disgust for the tactics continued from p.14 By the end of August, Van Maren expects the group to have delivered more than a million flyers, claiming this to be the biggest anti-abortion campaign in Canadian history. Defending the graphic flyer When asked about the group's use of graphic images in their flyers Van Maren defended the practice as an effective way of getting the group's point across. "We use the tactic of showing people abortion victim photography because we have seen -- time and time CONCRETE again -- that people change their minds about abortion when they realize that it is a horrifying act of violence that dismembers, decapitates, and disembowels a living human being," he said in an email. "We have seen many changed minds, changed hearts, and saved lives because of these pictures -- and we have independent polling proving that people are swayed." The group also commented on the concern that children will see graphic images. "CCBR does not directly target children with our campaigns -- they aren't the ones perpetrating this injustice nor the I am disgusted and disturbed, not just by the images, but that any organization purporting to uphold the rights and dignity of an unborn child would actually devalue the worth of such a child by striving for shock value. Knox Presbyterian Church Rev. Mike Marsden ones complicit in it," reads a statement on the CCBR website. "The reality, however, is that it is impossible to reach teenagers and adults in society where no children will ever be present." The statement goes on to say when parents see these images, they can hide them from their young children or seize on it as a "teaching opportunity." A representative from the local pro-life group Halton Alive said it had nothing to do with the #NO2Trudeau campaign. Halton Alive's Executive Director Elea Hofman said her group does not use graphic images in its work, but noted she understands why others do. "We understand the purpose of showing people what abortion really is. The purpose is to show people what is really happening," she said. "To be honest, I think that if people are upset by the images on the postcards then really it is time to be upset that abortion is gruesomely killing babies like that rather than just being upset they have to see it." Conservative MP appalled Oakville Conservative MP Terence Young has received complaints about the imagery of the #NO2Trudeau campaign flyers and is not impressed. "I am appalled by these tactics," said Young. Liberal candidate appalled Oakville Federal Liberal Candidate John Oliver spoke out against the flyers. "I have learned, with dismay, Oakville mailboxes are being flooded with graphic and disturbing images as part of a national campaign to discredit the Liberal party," said Oliver. "We are appalled that young children and adults are being exposed to this disgraceful type of flyer. The Liberal Party of Canada is committed to upholding the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms including the Charter rights for Canadian women." "This has absolutely nothing to do with the Conservative Party or me. I don't know anything about this organization and, frankly, I don't want to." Rev. Mike Marsden, lead minister of Knox Presbyterian Church, also takes issue with the flyers, which he condemned as exploitative. Reverend disgusted "I am disgusted and disturbed, not just by the images, but that any organization purporting to uphold the rights and dignity of an unborn child would actually devalue the worth of such a child by striving for shock value," said Marsden in an email to Campaign Life Coalition, which was also sent to the Oakville Beaver. "The use your organization has made of such images is, in my opinion, the ultimate degradation... The children represented did not choose to be conceived, nor did they choose to be aborted, but neither did they choose to be exploited by your organization in death." Halton police have confirmed they are aware of the postcards being delivered throughout Halton, but noted while the distribution of graphic images may be offensive to some it is not criminal in nature and is not an investigation for police.
