In 2014, the overall residential waste diversion rate was 60 per cent. This rate applies to all residential waste material managed by Halton Region through our programs and services. This is one of the highest residential waste diversion rates in Ontario! Thank you Halton residents! Joint Municipal-Regional Waste Management Committee The Committee was established as a Condition of Approval for the Halton Waste Management Site when it opened in 1992. The Committee advises Halton Regional Council regarding programs and strategies to promote the 3Rs--reduce, reuse, recycle to minimize the amount of waste going to the landfill. The Committee is comprised of 13 members from Burlington, Halton Hills, Milton and Oakville. The primary focus for 2014 was to support and review the planned implementation of the Multi-residential GreenCart organics program beginning in 2014; inform committee members about the state of Extended Producer Responsibility in the Province of Ontario; and, to review the planned procurement process for the waste collection contracts commencing in 2016. How We Achieved It Solid Waste Management Strategy Halton Region has completed four of the six initiatives identified in its 2012-2016 Solid Waste Management Strategy. In 2014, Halton Region continued to build on the success of the already completed strategy initiatives by continuing to move forward with enhancing multiresidential waste diversion by implementing the GreenCart program in apartment buildings.
