Government intervention clearing the air in Halton by Bob Mitchell Oakville Beaver Staff Health 35 | Thursday, July 16, 2015 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com "Connected to your Community" Government intervention is having a positive effect on air quality in Halton, says Dr. Hamidah Meghani, Regional Medical Officer of Health (MOH). "But they can do more in the future," the Region's top physician told Halton's Health and Social Services committee members last week. "Government intervention can go further in the future to (encourage)... active transportation (bicycles, walking) that will not only further reduce energy consumption but also improve our air quality," she said. Meghani presented the Region's annual air quality report, which was submitted to Regional council last week. The paper focussed primarily on Milton where the Region's health department has operated its own air quality monitoring station since 2008. The Ontario Ministry of Environment and Climate Change runs similar monitoring stations in both Oakville and Burlington. Halton's MOH said the Region can also expect to see significant improvements in Halton's air quality in the future by not having coal-fired generating stations operating any more. Government intervention can go further in the future to (encourage)... active transportation (bicycling, walking) that will not only further reduce energy consumption, but also improve our air quality. Our air quality is relatively stable. It's doing well," she told committee members. Air quality in Halton is related to several factors, said Meghani, citing air quality from neighbouring municipalities, emissions from motor vehicles, industry and home energy use. The Milton station uses equipment identical to that used by the Province elsewhere in Halton. It measures the same five common air pollutants: ground level ozone, fine particulate matter, nitrogen dioxide, sulphur dioxide and carbon monoxide. Are you sick and tired of being sick and tired?
