He joined the military in 1940 and was stationed in England until 1945 where he served in the postal corp. When the Second World War ended, he returned to his job at Loblaws. Chambres eventually worked for Ford in Oakville, in the data processing department and retired from the company in 1980 at age 65. "Well, I knew they were getting to that point a long time ago. You didn't have to live to be 100 to see that," he said. "We used to be able to sit in the greys for $5 and park at the Eaton College Street parking lot and that didn't cost you a penny and then walk over to Maple Leaf Gardens." He still watches the Leafs, along with the Blue Jays and Argos. "I really watch all sports, especially golf," Chambres said. "I played a lot of golf at one time, but I wasn't too good at it. I probably last played in the late 1980s. I don't think I'll try to go back to it now. "I also played mini golf at a spot that used to be right in downtown Oakville on Lakeshore Road where Oliver's restaurant is now located," he said. He and his friends ate their lunch down at the old Maple Leafs baseball stadium on Lakeshore Road and watched the minor league team practise. Over the years he's been amazed by the leaps in technology. He used to enjoy playing cards, but now he plays solitaire on his iPad. "We used to play cribbage lot inside a pub on our way home when I was stationed in England during the war," he said. "My friend and I would play three hands and sometimes they were very short games. One time, we sat down and we dealt three hands and the game was over. That was amazing. I wasn't that good at poker, but I enjoyed playing billiards and snooker." Chambres and his late wife Ethel, who were married for 65 years until she died of a stroke, had a son Bill and a daughter Patricia, who along with Bill's wife, Jean, organized Chambres' birthday celebration. He has two sisters, including Marjory (Marnie), 96, who were invited to the birthday bash. The local man met Ethel in England when she was working as an usherette in a movie theatre. "I finally got the nerve to ask her out and we ended up together from then on," he said. Chambres said he used to smoke "like a chimney" but quit within a week of his wife quitting. That was more than 40 years ago. Besides his fractured pelvis, he's also had a knee replacement and a couple of hernia operations. Chambres hasn't driven in downtown Toronto for many years, but a few years ago his family took him up the CN Tower. "I was amazed when we drove along the Gardiner Expressway with all those condos. You couldn't even see the water," he said. "When I worked down there, there was all open spaces with lots of room." Chambres usually drinks coffee, tea and filtered water. "And I enjoy the occasional rum-and-coke," he said. He usually cooks steaks, chicken thighs, pork chops and salmon on his George Foreman grill. "I just eat the ordinary stuff," he said. "But I also like chocolate bars, especially Sweet Marie. Lately, I've been eating a lot of those nature granola bars.
