www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Friday, July 24, 2015 | 10 Town to clear algae off Reflection Bay near Bronte Harbour by David Lea Oakville Beaver Staff Residents living near the Bronte Marina who are sick of the appearance and smell of algae on the nearby Reflection Bay beach will get some relief soon. Chris Mark, director of Parks and Open Space at the Town of Oakville, said Town staff has tentatively planned to remove the algae, which has washed ashore this week. The Town does clean up accumulated shoreline algae, but only at the shoreline area at the bottom of East Street, which includes the Reflection Bay beach area. For the rest of Oakville's public shoreline, algae accumulation is not a AIRE ONE MADNEss sAlE! $700 OFF HI-EFFICIENCY CENTRAL AIR $ significant problem, said Mark, who also emphasized Town staff would only be cleaning the beach. "We do not pick up the floating mats of algae. There is a big difference there," he said. "Years ago we tried that and had very limited success. While the algae mats look fairly substantial once you touch them they break apart... It becomes very fragmented and very stringy. It is only when it gets on shore and it dries that you can take a pitchfork to it and throw it out." While Mark said there are floating algae mats just off the Reflection Bay beach the Town will not be able to do anything about them until they wash ashore. Mark said the Town performs algae beach cleanup at this designated area on an as needed basis. "Some years we will do it eight or 10 times, some years we will do it two or three times," said Mark. "It all depends on the year, the weather and the lake temperature because as the lake temperature gets warm more algae is produced and then sluffs off with the winds and the currents." The Town budgets about $60,000 per year for algae removal. Mark said the removal process is a very labour intensive one involving staff members picking the algae up with pitchforks and loading it onto a truck. From there the Town must coordinate with the Region to take the algae to the landfill so it can be buried immediately. 29 /mTH OAC* IN O.P.A.
