Longhorns snap losing streak With four of their seven losses this season coming by four points or less, the Oakville Longhorns might have been the best winless team in Northern Football Conference history. The Longhorns won't qualify for that distinction this year, however, after securing their first victory in three years on the final day of the regular season Saturday in Hamilton. Henry Clarke's four-yard touchdown run in overtime snapped a 22-22 deadlock, Chris Hibbert added a two-point conversion and the Longhorns held on for a 30-22 win over the Hamilton Steel City Patriots. Trailing 15-0 early in the second quarter, Oakville began its comeback when Archelaus Jack hauled in a 13-yard TD pass from Mickey Trumper. A two-point conversion by Ryan Batchelor made the score 15-8 Hamilton at half. The Longhorns took their first lead four minutes into the third quarter as Hibbert returned a fumble 60 yards for a score and Jack caught a pass for another two-point Expect concerts, bigger crowds, maybe even a beach club in 2016 conversion, putting Oakville up 16-15. The Patriots moved back in front on a 33-yard interception return later in the quarter, but Hibbert tied the game on a 45-yard reception from Trumper midway through the fourth. continued from p.30 a beach club in the valley (complete with change stations, sand, a lifeguard stand and maybe even a beach volleyball court) close to the 14th hole. And then there are headaches that need to be addressed regarding parking, shuttles and crowd control. After Sunday's climactic ending, spectators had to endure long delays leaving the property as approximately 25,000 people had to exit through a 20-foot gate onto Dorval Drive that had one lane shut down during the tournament. McLaughlin is hoping that next year the entire road can be closed, at least on Sunday. "That's my next ask of the Town... The economic impact (of the Canadian Open) to the community is between $20-25 million," McLaughlin said. "I think it's time we go back and re-look at what's available... with parking in general. It's a huge issue," he added. "I expect these crowds to get bigger and bigger and bigger." -- Jon Kuiperij can be followed on Twitter @Beaversports 31 | Thursday, July 30, 2015 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com Buzz limps home down 0-2 to Akwesasne in conference final Through two games of the Ontario Lacrosse Association junior B East Conference final, the biggest positive for the Oakville Buzz might be that it will host the duration of the series. The Akwesasne Indians were inhospitable hosts last weekend, dumping Oakville 12-7 in Game 1 Saturday and then routing the Buzz 19-7 Sunday to take a 2-0 lead in the bestof-five series. Due to the 500-kilometre distance between the two communities, Oakville will host the remainder of the East final this weekend despite the fact the Indians are the top seed in the conference. Akwesasne had the choice of opening the series at home or hosting the third and, if necessary, fourth and fifth games. The Buzz will look to stay alive Friday at Toronto Rock Athletic Centre when it hosts Game 3 at 8:30 p.m. If Oakville can extend the series, Game 4 would be played this Saturday and a potential Game 5 the following day, both at TRAC. Joe French (two goals, four assists), Eddie Renaud (three goals, one assist) and Dalton Follows (two goals) combined to provide all of Oakville's markers in Game 1. The Buzz, however, was held scoreless in the second period as Akwesasne built an 8-3 lead through 40 minutes. Sunday, Oakville's third consecutive goal pulled the Buzz to within 10-7 early in the third period before the Indians finished with a 9-0 run. French again paced Oakville with three goals and two assists, while Ben French -- Joe's younger brother -- and Keyan McQueen contributed a goal and three helpers each. Jake Nyhuus and Dalton Follows added singles.
