Program aims to change mindset continued from p.5 for about 14 hours with additional workshops. The idea is to develop a violence-prevention program that is gender responsive, positive and helps reduce gender-based violence. McDermott said, according to statistics compiled by the Ontario Women's Directorate, domestic violence is disproportionately committed by men, whether it's against women, children or transgender people. "There has to be a reason. We want men to ask themselves what could the perpetrator have done to stop it," he said. "Why did they make the choice to act in a violent way?" McDermott said they are looking for volunteers who want to make a change for the better in their community by engaging other men. "We're looking for anybody who has an interest to impact healthier views of masculinity. We're looking for men who will become advocates... I don't perpetrate violence and I never will and I will advocate that until I'm out of breath." Baker-Reed said the program is essentially looking for male volunteers who support equality in society. "We're not a referral program," she said. "We're asking the question, what does it mean to be a man? What does it mean to be an equal member of society?" she said. "Women are certainly harmed by male violence, but men are also harmed." Initially, the volunteers will be training with McDermott, and once their training is finished, they will not only be able to pass on this awareness to others, but take it with them in their daily lives. "They will be more prepared for those micro-aggressions that happen every day," McDermott said. "We want them to go out into the world and be male allies in their everyday life." The plan is to eventually go into schools, businesses and other institutions. Next year, special events and conferences are also planned. McDermott expects to have between eight to 12 participants in the first session.
