B2 THE OAKVILLE BEAVER Wednesday April 4, 2001 Wellknown doctor and OBEmember dies Dr. William John Campbell (Cam) MacArthur, one of Oakville's best loved and most famous physicians, has died at the age of 87. MacArthur died at home, his Hornby farm, on Monday following a 30month battle with cancer. A funeral service will be held Friday at St. Jude's Anglican Church at 2 p.m. He was bom on Dec. 2, 1913 in Winnipeg, Man. He married Dorothy Tomlinson, on June 8, 1940 in Clarkson. The couple celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary last year. He attended the University of Manitoba, and graduated from medicine at McGill University, in 1938. He was cap tain of McGill's football team, and always remained a proud alumnus. After spending a year at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, he inter rupted his budding medical career to serve as medical officer with the RCAF Spitfire Squadron in England during World War E L Wounded during the D-Day landing, he recuperated and served as medical officer at Carpiquet Airbase in France. Upon returning to Canada, he joined the medical staff at Toronto Western Hospital. In 1946 Dr. MacArthur established his own medical practice in Oakville. From 1946 to 1972, he was also the school physician at Appleby College. He became one of the founders of Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital in 1950, and served as its Chief of Suigery for 10 years and Chief of Staff for 13 years. He was the only general surgeon in Oakville at the time. Throughout the years, he mentored many young doctors and nurses. Dr. MacArthur retired in 1976, however, he continued to visit OTMH daily, until recently, encouraging staff and bringing cheerful greetings to patients. "He always put friends and family first," comments grandson Scott MacArthur. "He put the concerns of others ahead of his own. He was interested in helping anybody - he helped absolutely everybody. "And, he always made a point of attending his grandchildren's sports, the atrical and musical events - whatever it was. He would frequently change his plans to be at these things, even if he had a dinner or another function to go to, for the sake of his grandkids." A dedicated Rotarian, he was twice named a Paul Harris Fellow - Rotary's highest honour. In 1970, when he and Dorothy first vis ited the island of Tortola in the British Virgin Islands (BVI), Dr. MacArthur took a three-month locum for a vacationing physician. Thus began a 30-year associa tion with BVI, assisting the medical and dental community in sourcing equipment. as a volunteer. He arranged for the Oakville Rotary Club to fund travel for a number of BVI children to Toronto for specialized medical treatment. They called him `Doc.' For this, he was named an Honoury Belonger. In 1985, he was named a Member of the Order of the British Empire (OBE). Dr. MacArthur and his wife traveled the world, spent summers at their Georgian Bay cottage, and vacationed in Tortola during the winter. Surviving him are his wife, four chil dren, 12 grandchildren and five great grandchildren. Visitation is at the Kopriva Taylor Community Funeral Home, 64 Lakeshore Rd. W., today from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., and Thursday from 2 to 4 p.m., and again from 7 to 9 p.m. In memorial donations may be sent to Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital.
