Hosted by the Downtown Oakville Business Improvement Area (BIA), the annual festival, that's in its 23rd year, is free of charge and continues with performances throughout Saturday (Aug. 8) -- with a bonus Sunday (Aug. 9) matinée performance in Towne Square. The entertainment is held in the heart of Downtown Oakville, spanning six blocks along Lakeshore Road East from Navy to Allan streets. "For us, it's an important event, both to highlight the great things that downtown has to offer, a chance to visit the restaurants and shops while you're here enjoying the great music (and) we do think culture is very important too, so we want to highlight that downtown is a great place you can discover and enjoy great cultural activities," said Sharlene Plewman, Downtown Oakville Business Improvement Area (BIA) executive director. see Festival on p.4 Oakville Beaver Staff Supporters follow Bill Howe of Toronto, survivor of an accident that caused a spinal cord injury, and his guide dog Angus on their walk with the torch at the 2015 Toronto Parapan Am Torch rally in Oakville Wednesday. Howe received the torch from Nathalie Chartrand of Montreal, a visually-impaired, former Paralympic athlete. | photo by Justin Greaves Oakville Beaver (Follow on Twitter @halton_photog or facebook.com/HaltonPhotog) Six years ago Bill Howe was paralyzed and con ned to a wheelchair after breaking his neck in three places when he fell down a ight of stairs in a drunken stupor. He was told there was little chance he would ever walk again. But this week, Howe was among the walking torchbearers, with Angus, his trusty Golden Retriever guide dog by his side, as the 2015 Toronto Parapan Am Games torch relay made a stop in Oakville at the Lions Foundation of Canada Dog Guide Training Centre. His next goal: climbing the CN Tower. "I climb about 840 steps each day at the gym and one Nathalie Chartrand thing I've learned through my journey is that once you have reached a goal, set new ones," said Howe, 45, who snapped the C4, 5 and 6 vertebrae in his neck when he fell after a night of drinking. see Howe on p.14 · HOME · AUTO · LIFE · BUSINESS · AV I AT I O N T H E M A G N E S G RO U P I N C . 1540 Cornwall Rd., Suite #100, Oakville, ON L6J 7W5 Tel: 905-845-9793 Fax: 905-845-9149 www.magnesgroup.com END INSURANCE CONFUSION.
