The Oakville Fire Department is calling on residents to be safe this long weekend and to be considerate of their neighbours particularly if their plans involve outdoor fires or fireworks. Residents are reminded, in Oakville, the discharging of fireworks in public spaces is not permitted without approval from the Town, and although store-bought fireworks Fire department discourages use of store-bought fireworks are readily available, the Oakville Fire Department does not recommend their use. "We recognize residents may want to enjoy the long weekend by socializing in the backyard around an open fire or using fireworks for weekend celebrations," said Glenn Barwell, public education officer, Oakville Fire Department. "If these activities are part of your plans, we ask that you stay safe this holiday weekend and follow the Town's regulations." The Town of Oakville bylaws regulate the use of open fires and fireworks in a way that is intended to be considerate of the community as a whole. Recreational burning on private property in urban areas is allowed. However, if an Oakville fire official determines a fire presents a hazard or is having a negative impact on others, the fire must be extinguished immediately. Milton Mayor Gord Krantz admitted he wasn't on board with any recommendation that involved adding more politicians to an already crowded Regional council table. "I wanted `right sizing,' as I refer to it, which would mean a reduction in Regional council. The last thing constituents want is more politicians," he said. Before the Region can approve a recommendation, the majority of lower-tier councils must agree on a compromise, according to the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing (MMAH). With Milton council's recent decision to add three representatives, it appears a majority has been reached. Halton Hills and Oakville both passed the same recommendation earlier this year. Burlington council, on the other hand, opted to support Milton's initial recommendation, adding only two Milton councillors by 2018. In order to consider other changes, we need to have much more comprehensive and recent data," said Goldring. If the municipalities decide to wait until after the 2016 census, any changes would have to be pushed back to the Region's 2022-2026 term of council. A STEP BEYOND IN CARE Do you have: Timing critical With 1997 being the last time an imbalance in Regional representation was addressed, timing is critical. Since all four municipalities have passed resolutions, Carr expects it will be on Halton Region's agenda "sometime very soon." If it passes at the Region, it will then go to the Province for final approval and changes could Salima Kassam Reg.
