Wednesday April 18, 2001 THE OAKVILLE BEAVER B3 Super Cities Walk for MS wins support from Loblaws By Debbie McDowell & Anita Boyce SPECIAL TO THE BEAVER Wayne Mori is determined to do something about MS. The store manager of the North Oakville Loblaws on Trafalgar Road and Dundas Street, is excited that Loblaws is once again a national spon sor for the Super Cities Walk for Multiple Sclerosis (MS). On Sunday April 22, Mori and some 20 Loblaws employees and their fami lies will participate in Oakville's sec ond annual Super Cities. Walk. He and his employees will walk as a Loblaws' Team MS. The Walk, which begins at 9:30 a.m. at the Oakland's Regional Centre, 53 Bond St., offers both a 5 km and 10 km route. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. The Oakville Walk will help raise funds and awareness for multiple scle rosis, a devastating disease which attacks the central nervous system. Most often striking women and men between the ages of 20 and 40 during their primary career and family years, MS is an unpredictable and at times disabling disease. Canada has one of the highest rates of MS in the world with an estimated 50,000 Canadians diagnosed. Mori, his family and store employ ees and their families participated in the inaugural Oakville Super Cities Walk last year and together raised close to $ 1,000. His North Oakville store was host to the 2000 Walk and supplied enough food for the over 500 Walkers. This year his store will do the same for what looks to be an even larger turnout. This year's Oakville Super Cities Walk is expected to attract over 700 partici pants. Like many participants, the disease affected Mori personally when a close family member was diagnosed with MS. He saw the Walk as an opportuni ty for his store to get involved in an ini tiative that hit close to home. "It's a great day to spend with co workers, family and friends and walk to support people that need your help," he says. "You really know your helping somebody." The Walk provides an excellent opportunity for employees to meet out side the workplace in a relaxed envi ronment and enjoy a social event. Offering staff the opportunity to par take in events like this creates a fun environment and makes the job more enjoyable for everyone. For high school students, the Walk is a useful and entertaining way to earn communi ty service hours, necessary before grad uation. The Super Cities Walk for MS offers an opportunity to help raise funds for the MS Society of Canada's research initiatives and support services while enjoying the scenic and historical sites of Old Oakville. Funds raised by the event are channeled into various local support services and programs for peo ple with MS and their families. On Sunday, join hundreds of walk ers and put a spring in your step in the fastest growing charitable event across Canada. An official Team MS has four or more members, a registered captain and a team name. All teams are eligible for prizes. If interested in forming a team or just want to walk and support a great cause by participating in the 2001 Super Cities Walk for MS, visit www.supercitieswalk.com or call 1888-822-8467 to register. Debbie McDowell and Anita Boyce are media relations volunteers for the Super Cities Walk fo r MS. Wayne Mori, store manager o f the Oakville North Loblaws, and his team encourage others to enter team s in Sunday's Super Cities Walk for MS. Individuals are also welcome to participate. "O ur food is real Italian food," says Johnny. "Everyone says that, but a lot o f places are really Italian/C anadian." At Elite Restaurant, for instance, there will be no raised eyebrows if the custom er wishes to have the salad after the pasta - in the traditional Italian way. "In Italy, the salad always comes after so it doesn't fill you up before the pasta," explains Johnny.
