What began in 1992 with 30 volunteers cleaning up the shores of Bronte Creek at the QEW overpass expanded to 400 volunteers at 16 clean-up sites last sites last year. In addition, 3,000 students from 19 local schools cleaned up their school grounds as well as nearby parks and ravines. This year's sites include four Bronte Creek sites: -- Bronte Harbour: Meet at Bronte Bluffs Park on West River. -- Petro-Canada Park: Enter off west side of Bronte Road, north of Bridge Road (from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.). -- QEW Overpass at Bronte Road: Join students with the Bronte Creek. -- Bronte Creek Park: Gather at the south entrance on Burloak Drive, north of the QEW. Parking is available in the Royal Bank parking lot. Staffed by The Friends of Bronte Creek (from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.). And at: -- Glen Abbey: Start at Nottinghill Park for a fun clean up of the trails along the Taplow, Glen Oak and McCraney Creeks. Staffed by members of Oakvillegreen. -- West Oak Trails: From Sixteen Hollow Park, help with the clean up of the Sixteen Mile Creek Trail. -- Sheridan College: Meet at the rear parking lot for the clean up of the creeks, parks and forests of College Park. -- River Oaks: The Munn's Creek Trail will be cleaned up by joining members of the River Oaks Residents Association at the Recreation Centre on Sixth Line (from 8 a.m. to 12 noon). -- Old Oakville: Clean up the shores of the 16 Mile Creek at Old Mill Road and Hogs Back Park by meeting at Cross Avenue and Speers Road. Park at the GO Station. -- Brook Valley Park: Off Warminster, south of Bridge Road. -- Downtown: Meet at Lakeside Park on Navy Street to be greeted by The Oakville Lakeside Residents Association (from 10 a.m. to 12 noon). -- Lions Valley Park: Gather at the lower parking lot, south of Dundas Street just east of Fourth Line. -- Glenashton Drive Bridge: Meet between Eighth Line & Trafalgar for the clean up of Morrison Valley North and South. -- Iroquois Ridge: Gather at the Falgarwood Pool on Grosvenor Street and Gainsborough Drive. Meetings to discuss Catholic high school boundaries The Halton Catholic District School Board has scheduled three community consultation meetings over the next week to allow public input on the bound aries for its latest high school in north east Oakville. The first of the public meetings takes place tonight (Wednesday) at St. Ignatius of Loyola Secondary School, 1550 Nottinghill Gate. Start time for this forum, as well as the remaining two, is 6:30 p.m. (Residents can view the infor mation charts and interim report starting at 6:30 p.m. with presentations to begin at 7:30 p.m.) The second meeting takes place tomorrow at Holy Family Elementary School, 1420 Grosvenor St. The third takes place Monday at St. Thomas Aquinas Secondary School, 124 Margaret Dr. The Board is leaning toward an option that would see the new high school draw from Our Lady of Peace, St. Andrew, St. John, St. Marguerite and St. Michael. Final recommendations are expected to be presented to the Board no later than June in order to give parents and staff appropriate time to prepare for Holy Trinity's opening. On April 3, the Board approved the name Holy Trinity Catholic Secondary School for facility, a new Grade 9 to 12 school to be located at 1234 Sixth Line just north of the River Oaks Recreation Centre between River Glen Boulevard and Munn's Avenue West. This will be a three-storey, 15,839square metre building with a 1,250-stu dent capacity. The expected opening is September 2002. The Oakville Secondary School Boundary Committee, comprised of rep resentatives from each of the affected elementary and secondary schools, has met several times and prepared its rec ommendations. Factored into these deliberations has been Ministry of Education transporta tion funding, portable classroom require ments, projected long-term enrollment numbers for St, Ignatius of Loyola and St. Thomas Aquinas Secondary Schools, Grade 8 enrollments from affected ele mentary schools and more. The Committee then narrowed down six earlier scenarios to three, although members have not precluded the possi bility of other scenarios arising from the community consultation process. The scenarios to be presented at the public meetings are: Scenario #1 - A catchment area including the following elementary schools: Our Lady of Peace, St. Andrew, St. John, St. Marguerite, St. Michael and Holy Family. The attendance areas for St. Ignatius and St. Thomas Aquinas would remain the same, excluding the above associate elementary schools. Scenario #2 - An attendance area east of the Sixteen Mile Creek, west of the Mississauga border, north of Upper Middle Road and south of Dundas Street. Holy Family would remain at S t Thomas Aquinas while St. Michael and a portion of St. John (south of Upper Middle Road) would remain with St. Ignatius. Scenario #6 - A catchment area including the following elementary schools: Our Lady of Peace, S t Andrew, St. John, St. Marguerite and St. Michael. The catchment area for St. Ignatius would include Mother Teresa, St. Bernadette and St. Matthew. The catch ment area for St. Thomas Aquinas would include St. Dominic, St. Joseph, St. James, St. Vincent St. Luke and Holy Family. After reviewing each of the scenar ios, the Committee concluded that Scenario #6 would comprise its interim recommendation. After the 11 students expressed their thoughts, three winners were chosen by judges Marion West, Past President of First Oakville Toastm asters, Rosem ary Gosse, a teacher at Deercroft Montessori and the Rev. Jim Gill, a minister of Walton Memorial United Church. Winners were: First-Natalie Bazar, from Our Lady o f Peace; Second-Cliff Murray, from Morden Public School and Third-N atasha Kucerak from Gladys Speers Public School. All participants received a certifi cate of participation, and the three finalists received special medals. Both Bazar and M urray will advance to the zone level competition, and if successful, have an opportunity to attend the district level competition where winners will share in $3,000 U.S. scholarships.
