www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Thursday, September 10, 2015 | 34 Swim or Walk for Mental Health returns in the fall Frank Zamuner's fundraiser for mental health has come a long way since its beginnings seven years ago. The Swim or Walk for Mental Health has become a local annual tradition at the grounds of Appleby College, 540 Lakeshore Rd. W., raising tens of thousands of dollars every year for mental health programs that help Oakville residents. Organizers for this year's fundraiser, on Sunday, Oct. 4, are hoping to raise $35,000 -- last year's event netted more than $30,000 towards its cause. Proceeds, this year, will continue to support the Recovery through Education for Adolescents and Children in Halton (REACH) program. Halton Healthcare Services Outpatient Mental Health Program, in partnership with the Halton District School Board, added a second classroom at a local high school to provide academic programming with intensive mental health treatment. `Challenge ourselves to make a difference' continued from p.33 Princess Margaret Cancer Centre is leading the revolution in personalized cancer medicine, allowing The Princess Margaret to detect cancers earlier, diagnose with more precision, target treatment for each patient and support patients and their families throughout the cancer journey. This year, I am participating in the inaugural Shoppers Drug Mart OneWalk to Conquer Cancer benefiting Princess Margaret Cancer Centre. It's a one-day, 25-kilometre walk throughout the streets of Toronto. I want others to get involved in OneWalk to challenge themselves. We need to challenges ourselves to make a difference in the world and to be a part of the cure for cancer. I want others to walk because I know first hand how hopeful participating makes me feel. Walking makes me feel proactive, because, even though I am not a scientist or a doctor, I am doing what I can to support the eradication of cancer. To prepare for the 25-kilometre walk, I used the spring and summer months to train. Walking alone or with friends to prepare for OneWalk, I know I will cross that finish line on Sept. 12 with my team -- The Desperate for a Cure Housewives. Hopefully you will, too. "This will allow the student to effectively reintegrate back into the regular school system," stated a media release. "Your support will help make a difference to hundreds of children and youth living in Oakville who need immediate care." The swim, held at Appleby College's indoor pool, runs from 7:30- 11 a.m., while a leisurely walk will take place from 9-11:30 a.m. around the campus grounds. Families, children and pets are invited to participate. Zamuner founded the swim as a means to fundraise for local mental health programs after he overcame the challenge of experiencing and living with depression in the wake of heart surgery. The Oakville resident began the swims during the summer at Brookdale Pool, but a subsequent change of venue to Appleby College increased the involvement of youths in the fundraiser.
