The Oakville Hornets waited until the last minutes to secure a pair of wins to open the Provincial Women's Hockey League season last weekend. Emma Maltais scored the go-ahead goal with less than three minutes remaining to lift Oakville to a 4-3 win over the Cambridge Rivulettes Friday in Cambridge. The following afternoon at Joshua's Creek Arenas, Meaghan Hector tallied with 50 seconds remaining in regulation to give the Hornets a 1-0 win over the Bluewater Hawks. Maltais scored twice in Friday's win, with Maddie Sisokin and Hector supplying the Hornets' other tallies. Nikki Cece made 20 stops to record the win in net. Saturday, Daniela Paniccia stopped all 12 shots she faced to earn the shutout. Oakville outshot the Hawks 32-12 on the afternoon and by a 21-3 margin in the third period. The Hornets, who won the PWHL regularseason title and the Ontario Women's Hockey Association intermediate AA championship last year, won't be back in league action until Tuesday, Sept. 29, when they are home to the Whitby Wolves at Joshua's Creek. Power-play woes cost Blades A powerless power play cost the Oakville Blades Saturday in Mississauga. Oakville was unable to capitalize on any of its 12 extra-man opportunities in a 6-2 loss to the host Chargers. Brendan D'Agostino and Eric Holland scored for the Blades, and Michael Botiz made 35 saves in his first start of the Ontario Junior Hockey League season. One night earlier, the Blades bounced back from an 8-2 loss the previous weekend in Georgetown to tie the Raiders 2-2 in Oakville's home opener at Sixteen Mile Sports Complex. Josh Kosack and Jackson Bales provided sec- Sports Briefs ond-period tallies for Oakville, which outshot Georgetown 39-22. Brendan McGlynn recorded the draw in net for the Blades. Oakville (1-2-1) will return to action tomorrow (Friday) when it hosts the Orangeville Flyers for a 7:30 p.m. start at Sixteen Mile. The game will be the first meeting between the teams since last year's playoffs, when Ryan Garvey scored with 9.8 seconds remaining in regulation to give Oakville a 4-3 win in Game 7 of the opening round. The Blades will then visit the St. Michael's Buzzers Sunday in Toronto. Blue Devils score late to win home finale Tyler Wasson scored late in regulation time to give the Oakville Blue Devils a 2-1 win over ANB Futbol in Oakville's final home game of the League1 Ontario men's soccer regular season Sunday at Sheridan College. ANB opened the scoring on a penalty kick in the first half, but the Devils responded with a better effort after intermission and tied the game on Filipe Vilela's league-high 18th goal of the year. Wasson then delivered the winner with a left-footed blast. Blue Devils coach Duncan Wilde credited his back four for limiting the opportunities of ANB's Adonijah Reid, who is tied with Vilela for the league scoring lead. With three games left to play in its schedule, all of them on the road, Oakville has a record of 16 wins, one draw and two losses, good for 49 points and a commanding lead in the League1 standings. Only the 12-1-4 Woodbridge Strikers, who have five games remaining, have any chance of overtaking the Blue Devils for top spot. Oakville will visit Sigma FC (11-4-3) this Saturday at Mississauga's Hershey Centre. Game time is scheduled for 8 p.m. Burda 6704 Back to Sewing, Quilting, Crafting & Decorating Sale!
