At 92 years old, the Oakville resident said the hospital has been a big part of her life -- and will remain so even when it closes its doors in a few months. "We had a real sense of community at OTMH and all aspects of the hospital worked well together. The spirit was there and everyone was so proud... certainly our patients were happy," said Parsons, who was a nurse when OTMH opened its doors to the community in 1950 with 50 beds, 13 doctors and 13 nurses. "We got used to the construction. Every time we turned around, there was another wing going up. There was a lot of growth in the community, so that's what had to happen." Parsons quickly moved up in the ranks and was head of the hospital's maternity wing before taking the helm, a role she held for 36 years until her retirement in 1987. "We have an annual reunion to maintain the friendships," she said. "A lot of us are getting much older, but we're still hanging in there. Things have changed a lot, but nothing has changed in our friendships."
