Bylaw will require pet shops to sell rescued cats and dogs by David Lea Oakville Beaver Staff 5 | Friday, September 18, 2015 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com If Oakville pet stores want to sell cats or dogs, the Town of Oakville is taking steps that will soon require them to get those animals exclusively from municipal animal shelters, registered humane societies or animal rescue groups. The Town's Administrative Services Committee voted Monday to change local bylaws to prevent pet shops from getting animals from any source other than those dealing in rescued animals. Jim Barry, manager of bylaw services with the Town, told the committee the proposed changes are aimed at keeping animals produced in so-called puppy mills out of local pet shops. "We had a lot of support from the pet stores. They don't do that (get their animals from puppy mills)," said Barry.
