www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Thursday, September 24, 2015 | 12 Terence Young, Conservative -- Oakville continued from p.6 Keeping Oakville neighbourhoods safe from threats is another issue Young is championing. He said a Liberal government would legalize marijuana and make the drug just as available as tobacco at corner stores. Young said if this happens, there will be a drastic increase in the number local children smoking marijuana. Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau said legalization would actually make it easier to keep pot out of the hands of children, bring in tax revenue for the government and take money away from organized crime. Trudeau said marijuana would not be sold just anywhere noting there would be a focus on regulating its sale. Young listed health as another major issue in this election. He said re-election is essential so he can ensure Health Canada begins to enforce Vanessa's Law. The drug safety bill commits Health Canada to a set of concrete initiatives that make easyto-understand regulatory health and safety information more available to Canadians with regard to prescription drugs. The information is intended to assist Canadians in being able to make well-informed decisions concerning their health and that of their family. The bill is named after Young's daughter, Vanessa Young, who died of a heart arrhythmia at the age of 15, after suffering from an adverse reaction to a prescription drug. "This will save many lives across Canada," said Young. He said he also wants to be re-elected so he can put his private member's bill on cellphone radiation back on the parliamentary order paper. The bill would require warning labels on cellphones, baby monitors, Wi-Fi routers and any other wireless devices sold in Canada about the potential health impacts of the electromagnetic radiation they emit. A big supporter of the auto sector, Young said one of the accomplishments he is proud of was getting more than $71 million for Ford Motor Company so it could upgrade the Oakville Ford Assembly Complex in September 2013. The Province of Ontario also chipped in more than $70 million to that venture, along with an investment from Ford itself. "They are now building the Ford Edge to be exported to 100 countries around the world," said Young. "That's 4,500 jobs in Oakville, hopefully for 10 years. I do want to continue supporting the auto industry and Ford." Prior to serving as Oakville's MP , Young worked for four years as Oakville's MPP (1995-99) where he served as parliamentary assistant to the ministers of education and finance. He also chaired the Standing Committee on Finance. Young currently serves as a member of the Standing Committees of Canadian Heritage. Following the death of his daughter Vanessa, Young founded Drug Safety Canada in 2002, a non-profit group dedicated to promoting the safe use of prescription drugs and raising awareness of the harms related to prescription drug use. His book Death By Prescription was published by Key Porter in 2009 and is being translated into French. Young lives in Oakville with Gloria, his wife of 33 years, and is father to two adult children, Madeline and Hart. Visit terenceyoungcampaign.com for more.
