continued from p.6 are friends and neighbours in Oakville and beyond, who are in and out of employment," said Oliver. "So, I really do feel there is a need to bring some leadership and development to the economy." Oliver said he is also concerned about Canada's democratic practices and wants to see open and transparent debate returned to the House of Commons. He takes issue with things like omnibus bills, which feature hundreds of legislative changes that make their way into law with no debate or discussion. Evidence-based decision-making is another practice Oliver said he would like to see returned to Ottawa. While much is demanded of an MP , Oliver said he is no stranger to large projects, pointing to the new Oakville hospital. The former CEO said he has worked on bringing a new hospital to Oakville for more than a decade, leading the $2.7 billion infrastructure project, from arranging the purchase of the land to advocating for funding, to bringing about its construction. "The knowledge and skills I've acquired running a large operation and working on a huge public infrastructure project, the new Oakville hospital is the 15th biggest public infrastructure project in Canada, I thought those were good skills and knowledge that would be translatable to Ottawa," said Oliver. If elected, Oliver says he would like to see a return to federal leadership and close participation with the provinces, concerning John Oliver, Liberal -- Oakville ways to move Canada's healthcare system forward. He said it has been a decade since there has been a meeting of rst ministers to talk about the issues and pressures in the healthcare system. Oliver said there has been a loss of engagement among Oakville residents when it comes to the federal process. He said he would change this by being a strong voice in representing the riding, and the views of Oakville residents, in Ottawa. Oliver currently sits as chair of the Partnerships for Health System Improvement Review Panel of the Canadian Institute of Health Research, and has served recently as Pension Observer of the Hospitals of Ontario Pension Plan (HOOPP) Board. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Ontario and has served as Assistant Deputy Minister for the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care. He received the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal in 2013 for service to Canada. Oliver has lived in Oakville for 20 years with his wife, Joanne, and three children.
